Does anyone know what they know when they say P.C. 31?  I have no idea what that is.

PC = police constable. Police in the UK are identified by a number on a badge (ie 31) and don't wear a name badge (like they do in the US ?)

I love this song.

It's gets too much sh*t for being "silly".

The sound of the song must have inspired many in the britpop scene in the early 90s

Blur could make a great cover of this me thinks.

Lol. We definately are polar opposites.

I think MSH is one of the Beatles 5 worst songs of all time. It actually devalues Abbey Road in my opinion.

Same. If I was introducing the band to someone new it is one of the songs I would have to apologise for. It's not just the lyric - the song just doesn't work

(from wikipedia):
The song took three days of overdubbing because McCartney imagined that it could be a future single. John Lennon later recalled, "he did everything to make it into a single, and it never was and it never could have been." According to Lennon, the band spent more money on that song than any other on Abbey Road, and he derided the song at the time as a prime example of McCartney's "granny-style" writing.

George Harrison described it in 1969 as "one of those instant whistle-along tunes which some people hate, and other people really like. It's a fun song, but it's kind of a drag because Maxwell keeps on destroying everyone like his girlfriend then the school teacher, and then, finally, the judge." In 1977, Harrison would be less charitable, stating "I mean, my God, 'Maxwell's Silver Hammer' was so fruity."

Even Ringo Starr recalled in an interview in early 2008: "The worst session ever was 'Maxwell's Silver Hammer.' It was the worst track we ever had to record. It went on for f***ing weeks. I thought it was mad."

personally i like the polka bass and the 'ahoooga" fog horn before the last chorus. not to mention the anvil, the moog synth, the awesome backing vocals and how nicely it leads into oh darling

I think that it is not true that they spent so much time and takes as it is usually said.John did not even play on it and always disliked it but what he said was simply untrue.About the money:what about the orchestras on some of the other songs?I can not see what so much money was exactly spent on.

I agree more with George's words.

Ringo is simply clueless, heheheh:it is insane to say that it went on for weeks, just take a look at the recording dates, oh please, it simply another silly myth, they were just a few days. And about the worst track, well, I am going to leave that one beacause it is about personal taste but if I were asked "what song is Ringo talking about?" I would say "one out of Sgt.Pepper's sessions maybe?", heheheheh.

By the way, I like the song and I do not consider it one of their worst tracks.
