It looks nice there, Dmitry.  Are you still in Turkey?

I plan to stay here two more months.

Very warm here! Sometimes I swim in the sea.
In Moscow there are snow and freezing rains.

Clear skies tonight after a rainy day...

Mars is at opposition and close to the Earth.  A Martian invasion might be imminent.  I hope Tom Jones is still in good voice...

Marsrise

Mars peeks from behind the limb of the Moon in this shot of the December 7th lunar occultation of the Red Planet. The image was taken with a 10-inch scope and a ZWO ASI290MC color camera by Dennis Stayer from Moorpark, California.

It was 56F here this morning.  Now it's 19F...

It's cold.  It's a cold place.

That sounds suspiciously like North Dakota, Barry.  :)

Kelley, looks like your area of the state really got slammed! Are you and your family getting along OK?

we took the family to Utah to go skiing, Thursday there was in the single digits when we woke, got up to around 20, flew home to Atlanta on Friday to single digits, colder than a ski resort.  Christmas morning in Atlanta is 17 degrees, no snow but cold

Merry Christmas with whatever weather you have

I'm envious, blmeanie. The snow in my area has been perfect for skiiing—this light, powdery snow!—but the temps are so cold that all the ski areas have shut down.

We are doing just fine, Kathy. Thank you for asking! We only got a couple of inches of snow, but the wind and, of course, the cold, were rough. The wind blew out the pilot light on the hot water tank several times, and Kevin discovered that the vent wasn’t working properly. The boiler vented out of the same pipe, and I guess we would have eventually developed a carbon monoxide issue. The heat was off for several hours, but we were okay. These old radiators remain hot for a long time. We’ve been planning to replace the natural gas water tank with an electric one, and the guys made it to Home Depot just before they closed. They spent Christmas Eve changing the boiler vent, running electrical wire, and installing the new tank. After that, I finished all the dishes I was trying to do as the hot water ran out! But this was nothing compared to what the folks in Buffalo are enduring. We’ve watched that area rebound from many big storms before, but this one is different.   :'(

I'm glad to hear that all is well, Kelley. Sounds like you guys dodged a bullet vis-à-vis the carbon monoxide issue. So glad you caught it.

I have been horrified at some of the news reports coming out of Buffalo, especially of people freezing to death in their cars. I make sure (read: nag) that my daughters have their cars completely outfitted with emergency kits (that include jumper cables, flares, flashlight, etc.), a collapsible shovel, extra blankets, and so on. And they both know not to keep the car running continually if they get stuck. It's scary how quickly the weather can turn.

Clear skies tonight and Jupiter is aligned with the Moon but not with Mars.  Too bad because we can't sing...

Cutline from a photo on the front page of today's paper. I love it: "Only" negative 20.  ha2ha

Three employees of Red Carpet Car Wash clear the sidewalk of snowdrifts along Century Avenue in north Bismarck on Thursday afternoon. "It's only negative 20 out here so it's not so bad, and it's something we have to deal with every year," Schmidt said.

This is one of the few reasons I like this state. It takes a lot to faze people up here.
