http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edison_Lighthouse
Apparently the lead singer (Tony Burrows) had 4 top singles at the same time in the UK, all under different names: "...The 'original' Edison Lighthouse was Tony Burrows (lead vocalist), Stuart Edwards (lead guitar), David Taylor (bass guitar), George Weyman (drums) and Ray Dorey (guitar).[2] The group's lone Top 40 hit "Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)"[1] (1970) was one of four near contemporaneous UK Singles Chart Top Ten hit singles by Burrows under different names, the others being White Plains' "My Baby Loves Lovin'", The Pipkins' "Gimme Dat Ding", and Brotherhood of Man's "United We Stand".[3] Burrows was also lead vocalist on the single "Beach Baby" (1974) for another studio only group, The First Class..."

I like the song. I used to like it a lot more, but i'm kind of bored with it anymore.

I have the 45 and I've got the song on my iPod. The verses sound too cheesy but the chorus is absolutely beautiful.

Never liked it personally. Tony Burrows was actually banned from Top Of The Pops at that time. He was on the show in four different guises one week. The BBC thought it might look like favouritism, so they banned him from appearing! I think Joost had this in his (excellent) quiz recently.

Tony Burrows also sang on 'Let's Go To San Francisco' by The Flower Pot Men. Here's an interesting interview with him:

The longest time I've spent in San Francisco was about three hours, between flights.

Punished for success! Don't let the rabid republican right hear about this example, we'll never hear the end of it!

Great interview, thanks!

Says he toured with the Lads from Liverpool: "Burrows played in the group the Kestrels, who toured with the Beatles twice....".

Anybody know anything else about that?

Thanks again for posting, Joost!

Great song. I really love the strings in it. I think the lyrics are cute, in a teenagery sort of way.

My favorite Tony Burrows song is 'Beach Baby'. Not just because it's a great song, but also because the composition sounds like 1963-1964 Beach Boys, while the arrangement sounds like 1969-1970 Beach Boys. And the Beach Boys themselves never made that combination. Apparently Brian Wilson likes it too, because he used the song as his intro on his last European tour. Interesting detail about 'Beach Baby': on the outro, you can hear the horns play the melody of 'Let's Go To San Francisco'! The Flower Pot Men and First Class were basically the same studio team.

That's a great song, and although I am not American, i felt it had a great sense of American nostalgia about it.

And First Class wasn't even an American group. Everybody who had anything to do with that song was British. :)

I guessed right ... hooray!

(It was the way you typed "about" that gave it away!  ;) )

I used to live in Minnesota, whenever I'd complain about how cold it was during the winter, I'd just remind myself that basically every Canadian was colder than me at that moment. It didn't really help me feel warmer in the end though ...
