Paul and showtunes
« on: October 06, 2008, 11:43:58 PM »

Warning: This thread was written by a musical theatre geek!

Okay, so we know that Paul has a rather significant affinity for showtunes. He covered Til There Was You from The Music Man on With the Beatles and many of his songs, such as Your Mother Should Know, have that sort of 1930s musical theatre feel to them. My question is, why hasn't Paul ever done any writing for Broadway? He's done practically everything else, I would think that this would be one of the first things he'd try!

Honey Pie is VERY Broadway in my opinion.
But I would totally blow off all of my money to see a Paul written Broadway musical.

Pity he didn't think of something like a Broadway or other musical show in the mid eighties instead of Give My Regards To Broad Street. It might have worked back then.  :)

"Give My Regards To Broad Street " would adapt quite well to the stage , it's got the right thin storey line a few good tunes .
All you need is a load of sweaty toothy leg warmers singing lets put on a show , and Bob's your uncle it will open and close in a fortnight .

Hey guys, don't knock Broad St!! I have very fond memories of going to a tiny old cinema to see it (none of the big screens near us showed it for very long), my friend was sick half way through, and my dad complained about being cold and uncomfortable!! Happy days....

I saw it at a legendarily crummy second run cinema on Yonge Street in Toronto which has since been replaced by a porn shop. Happy days indeed.  ;D

haha, the one across from the Eaton's Center??  I saw it when I was in TO the other day LOL.  Not to mention the whole time we were on Yonge St my parents were like talking a walk down memory lane!

But I definately think that some of Paul songs would be awesome on Broadway!

Nah, the old Rio just a little south of Gerrard on the east side of the street. I imagine the public health department closed them down. The place was that bad. ;D

I was thinking the same thing recently.  Paul is clearly a genius at writing catchy melodies in different genres, so I would imagine that doing a Broadway show would be right up his alley!  And I don't mean a jukebox musical like ABBA's "Mamma Mia," but a show with brand new songs written from scratch.  If he put careful and thoughtful effort into the songs, I have faith that Paul could pull this off.

Now, the question is...what should the show be about?

That's a good question. To be honest, I'd rather see a show written by an actual playwright- with Paul providing the music, of course. I think a period piece set in the 20s or 30s would be perfect for him! Maybe about the trials and tribulations of a large family, or a a group of teenagers discovering jazz music? Ohhh the possibilities.

I think he's got potential to write a musical. Broadstreet wasn't really and it was full of
his beatles songs. it would be interesting if he wrote a whole new piece for stage.
..........long as there is no more Frog Chorus's. :P

I also believe that Paul is capable of writing a musical, just as he was capable of composing classical music. So that is a very good idea and would be interesting if realized.
