50 Years Abbey Road: do or don't?
« on: August 09, 2019, 08:45:17 AM »

Special Edition here, Superdeluxe Version there: there's a lot of fuzz about the 50th Anniversary of Abbey Road. Including extra tracks and all that. Is there any new material (and unheard stuff for us diehard fans) on these special editions? Is it worth the buy?

not sure, wondering the same for myself

I did read something yesterday that was interesting about Abbey Road, first time the Beatles were recorded with an 8 track machine and in stereo, no mono version.

I get the impression there's less stuff on the sessions CDs than previously.

And only a few more tracks on the deluxe compared to the double CD.

But I'll be getting the deluxe for those extra tracks and the book.

The SPLHCB and white books were very well done. I go back to them now and again, so they're not something that stays on the shelf and is never looked at again.

I'm content with the Abbey Road LP I bought when it was released in October 1969, the CD I bought in 1987, and the 9-9-09 The Beatles (The Original Studio Recordings) box set.

I’m sure I’ll wind up getting it for Christmas. I have a problem with this sort of thing.

l know the feeling Kelley, I've asked my kids please don't buy me any more CDs or DVDs for Xmas or birthday as I have decluttered and got rid of all that plastic stuff, I listen to my music now on my computer on my phone using Bose headphones and on my Sonos speaker which is attached to the internet I can listen to thousands of radio stations and I find myself more often than not these days listening just to jazz as well as the odd Beatles foray of course I have no interest in owning CDs or DVDs or booklets anymore as they're just collected dust on the shelf lol.

I don’t really buy CDs anymore either. I did almost succumb to the white album reissue because I thought the remix sounded great and the bonus material seemed worth it. In the end though I found listening through my Apple iTunes subscription satisfied me. I imagine this won’t be quite as rich in unreleased stuff and I’ll have to wait to judge the remix. I imagine I will almost succumb again but then just listen through my iPad or phone  (I stream that to my tv 5.1 system for better sound).

Would be nice if there was some lost treasure on this 50th deal, but can that even be possible?  I hope they don't add a couple of throwaways like 'Watching Rainbows' or 'Black Dog Blues' or something like that.

Is that the first time Paul’s Goodbye has been officially issued? Been bootlegged to death but wasn’t on anthology.

Yes I think it is. Some people are surprised to see this song here because it hasn't much connection to Abbey Road.

The two session discs appear to be chronological. The Trident I Want You session was February 22 1969 and maybe Goodbye was written end of February 69. So the justification is the time period.

Goodbye is one of the songs not on the two CD sessions disc (that disc is not chronological but an outtake version of Abbey Road songs in standard order).

Thanks, zipp.  You reminded me that I have the complete Alternate Beatles Album Collection by Pear which was released about nineteen years ago.  Here's The Alternate Abbey Road CD track listing:

I got to hear some of what will be on the new Abbey Road collection years ago.  Some pretty good tracks on the Pear CD.  The new set will have more to offer.

I have this one - poor sound quality and misleading information!

Suffering as I do from completistitis, I shall of course be buying the Superdeluxe CD/BluRay package.

Like zipp I enjoyed the Pepper and White books and refer to them and play the discs reasonably often - they don't gather dust.

Tangible product is a must for me by the way. This ethereal/download carry on might be OK for less important material but if it's something I have to have (i.e. all Beatles product) then I need to be able to see and hold it.

Same with blu rays (which replaced my DVDs which replaced my Video Tapes). If it's a favourite film, documentary or whatever I must have it in a physical format. Shelf space is not a problem - I have a strict "only the favourites" code - lesser stuff I'll watch on YouTube or whatever.
