Revolver: Mono or stereo?
« on: August 05, 2005, 12:20:39 PM »

We all know that it was released originally on both, and both formats have slight differences in the songs.

But which format do you prefer?

This is mainly to the vinyl owners.

Good day sunshine on stereo is a nice attempt at stereo, considering it was 40 years ago.

I like them both pretty much equally - but I heard the Stereo album version first, then later when I heard the mono version of Tomorrow Never Knows it totally blew me away!!!!

Where do you guys get these mono versions?

I've heard She's Leaving Home (I know, from Sgt. Pepper) on Mono, but I haven't got a clue as to where you can get a Mono Release of it.

Same here!!!!! That song just sounds SO much more WOW in mono than stereo for some reason. Maybe it's because at that time they were still recording with mono in mind rather than the balance of stereo.

Unless you have it on vinyl the only way to hear those versions is on bootlegs. Or you can listen to MY vinyl copy of Tomorrow Never knows here: http://www.geocities.com/the_end_gb/dmforum/tomorrow.htm

It's the rare "606-1" version found only on the first pressing - it was quickly withdrawn because a part of the backwards guitar solo is missing! It is a totally different mix though and runs slightly longer. Hope you like it! ;D

Sounded very similar to me -- maybe I missed many of the different parts =P

I liked it, though.

We're still waiting for you at the PID board, btw =P =P =P

Aha, yes the 606-1 version is very similar to the Stereo mix (except the last part of the solo is missing!) - however, the subsequent Mono mix, used on all other Mono releases, is very different during the the backwards solo. I'll see if I can upload that too. :)

Pretty wild there End. Certainly some differences. I remember having a mono copy of Revolver back in '67. Of course it's long long gone now. :'(
I heard that the guitar part was basically Paul's Taxman solo reversed. Is that right?

I don't think so, as I recall (and I'll have to check this when I get home tonight) the track was played backwards so the arrangement could be worked out. The guitar solo was then recorded while the track played backwards - then, when the song was played the right way, the guitar solo is heard backwards but perfectly in-synch with the backing.
