George's weakest Beatle era song
« on: October 21, 2007, 09:48:01 PM »

I think this would be "Blue Jay Way"

(apart from being a prosaic recounting of Derek Taylor getting lost in the Hollywood Hills, it seems a very unremarkable melody for George, in my estimation. I never listen to it by itself anymore, and it's only bearable for me now when enjoying MMT in it's entirety--which is how I feel ALL Beatle albums should be listened to..)

It's a cross between Only A Northern Song & Blue Jay Way for me.

I like it's only a Northern Song a lot - it sounds really cool. Not a great melody at all, but the whole production is pretty cool IMO.

I'll call your Blue Jay Way, and raise one "Long,Long,Long".

I would say 'Don't Bother Me', but I'll cut him some slack as it was his first song recorded by them. So I'll say 'Only A Northern Song'. I like 'Blue Jay Way', btw.

I'm with you, but we're going to make a lot of people mad.  :)

People love "Long, Long, Long," and while I do my best to listen to it over and over, I still think its just a rushed, weak song.  Not terrible, but not as great as people on this forum make it out to be.  Different strokes, and all that stuff.  The Beatles put out a lot of songs that people either love or hate, and that was their genius, I suppose.

As far as George's weakest song...hmm...I Need You would fit the bill.  Its the weakest.  I'm sticking to that.

I do love "Long, Long Long", but the only complaint I have about it--and I've held this since 1968--is that George's voice didnt seem loud enough for me here--other than that, it's a very contemplative Harrison piece I quite cherish (although not as much as "Something")

I'd say Love You To because he said himself it was his first attempt to purposely compose a song around the sitar, and well, yeah...

EDIT: I like Blue Jay Way too  :)

I love "Piggies". Any song w/ the words

"In their styes with all their backing
They don't care what goes on around
In their eyes there's something lacking
What they need's a damn good whacking",  is AIGHT w/ me lol

The best Orwellian/"Animal Farm"-like diss of the Brittish upper class I've heard...friccin' awesome (even in its day)--the use of harpsichord is so satirical.

Hear, Hear!!  I'm with you!

The Beatles were rock and roll.  Not indian roll.

And I think the only sitar George really played on a Beatle song was "Norweigan Wood (This Turkey's Flown)."  Any other sitar - played by indian musicians.  No great achievement there.
