Moog, I've read that it had to do with Pete Best's lawsuit.  George was enigmatic when interviewed years later stating it had to do with the UK government.  But that was Taxman.  Who knows!?  Maybe it was Pattie.

I scored the new Hunter Davies book about the Beatles lyrics for Christmas. Despite his extensive research on the background to Beatle lyrics he couldn't find anything beyond George suggesting it was aimed at the government. To Hunter's credit he was extremely sceptical.

I'm not surprised it's on a specialist Beatles show, In My Life, but have you ever heard it in the context of Slade, Wham, 'Wonderful Christmastime', John & Yoko, Wizzard et al?
I've heard it once in about 15 years.....it's a rarity!

Never. And if I never hear that Wham song again, from them or any of the 10 thousand acts that have covered it I'll be very happy. It's one of the reasons I only listen to my Christmas music on Pandora.

Don't get me wrong, I never listen to music radio either as I suspect I own 100 times the amount of 60s music that Absolute 60s in the UK plays!

The only times I ever catch it is in department stores or charity shops and it's on those occasions that I base my judgement, and that's that 'Christmastime is here again' (still only available on the 1995 single?) is a genuine rarity.

Can't vouch for the rest of the world, but I doubt whether 1% of the British population have even heard it.
