In 1964 they were young teenagers when they had a #1 single (Leader of the Pack) in the US and toured with The Beatles.

In 1965 Mary recorded these radio "public service announcements" on how girls should behave...

...yes, 1965, when there were only two genders.

I love her accent.  They were from Cambria Heights in Queens NY, a few miles from where I lived.  All of us in Queens spoke that way.  High school speech teachers gave up on us.  :)

Thanks for the radio ads. Excllent advice!

I didn't realise the Shangri-Las were a white girl group from New Yorlk. I always assumed American girl groups in the sixties were black and from Chicago or whatever.

RIP Mary.

For me you'll always be the girl at the candy store.

When they were hired for gigs based upon demos they sent...

...That's Mary's older sister Betty doing the lead vocal.  Mary was only 14 years old at the time.  The picture used in this video was taken at a college performance in 1965...

RIP Mary.

I know just how you feel.

I'm saddened by this too, Todd.  It's another piece of my adolescence torn away from me.  I remember how hard the Shangri-Las worked to make it in the business.  I remember seeing them on the annual national Muscular Dystrophy and Cerebral Palsy telethons when they would switch to local stations.  They would perform in the middle of the night along with groups like The Young Rascals who were also trying to get themselves known.

Mary was so young when she she started.  But her singing voice soon developed to what we hear on recordings we have today.  She was only 16 years old when The Shangri-Las recorded Leader of the Pack, a #1 song for them...

Originally her sister Betty was to sing the lead vocal.  But her voice was a bit too sweet for the subject matter...

In the mix, they left in the line "Betty, is that Jimmy's ring you're wearing?"

Your statement struck me, Barry. As I increasingly read stories of music stars (and actors) passing away, it seems to strike a poignant note along the lines of what you said.

I hope Mary rests in peace. I don't know too many of the Shangri-Las' songs beyond "Leader of the Pack" and "Remember (Walking in the Sand)," but those two have had a long-time place on my playlist.

Kathy, the reason I reacted the way I did to this news is because these girls lived nearby and spoke with a similar accent, most evident in the last video I posted emphasizing the studio chat.  When Betty made a mistake, she said "To err is yooman."

Yup, we're known for that form of pronunciation.  It's an eastern Queens phenomenon.

The sad news struck close to home.  That, coupled with the fact that Mary was a contemporary, made the news even sadder for me.
