Every little thing (In Beatles world)
« on: July 18, 2009, 01:23:39 AM »

All you always wanna know but never ask!!!

There's many things that we don't know and maybe we are too shy to ask. Here is the place.

I start. I always wonder if the classic beatles formation on stage (George at the center, John and Paul on the sides) are something that they think or not. In case that has been thought, why they choose that? Why they use only two mics?

Understand? Sorry I make mistakes. My english is not too good

I've seen the "cla**ic stage formation" idea being attributed Epstein.

He was big into theatre and he accordingly knew what did and didn't work on stage (those leather suits...I mean really?).

Having the two microphones, in my opinion, looked much tidier than having three microphones. But I wonder what their stage set up was like before Epstein came along?

Maybe not every place they performed at during their early years had enough microphones (or any at all) for each singer so they shared and it just stuck?

Oh and I did read somewhere once about whether or not sharing a microphone improved or made any difference to the sound of the harmonies. Apparently it didn't so it was simply to do with aesthetics.

I got my own theory. I think that Paul and John go to the sides because they sing most of the songs and this was the way to please most of the audience. And Paul was located to the left to no crash his bass with the George's guitar in the harmonies.

Another thing that I like discuss is the fact of all members took lead vocal regularly. Was something natural or they tried to impose?
Ringo sang before with the Hurricanes?

I don't remember other band, before or after beatles, wich do so.

Maybe The Beach Boys, but Dennis took the lead vocal just in a few of numbers quite late.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. The Beatles are the only band I can think of besides maybe Fleetwood Mac that doesn't have an established lead vocalist.

The Band had three lead vocalists.

Queen. All four wrote and sang. Actually, not sure about the bass player singing lead.

Some of the bands I think no qualify.
Queen - John Deacon never was the LEAD singer
The Byrds (like The Hollies) - Had many singer, but not ALL members sing LEAD
The Monkees - I don't count this band, cos actually there's no band. They was 4 singers that a record company get together. The grandfhaters of the Backstreet Boys.

I suck!

But you can't really include Queen. Other members may have sang lead on some songs, but Freddy was billed as the lead singer.

Hi friends, you give many examples but I still wanna talk about if Ringo sang before Beatles.
There's histories about Pete singing a pair of songs

Some sources say that he sing Matchbox

Pete sing Peppermint Twist too (?)

Notice Paul on drums and George with the left-handed Hofner violin bass playing like a right-handed

Ringo did sing with Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, didn't he? I read that he sang Boys and Alley Oop while with them... And that that part of the show was called Starr Time...
But someone can correct me if I'm lying ;)

Nice pictures, by the way 8)

I think I read about the Starr Time, but I believe that this name was used to the Drum Solo.
Somewhere read that when The Beatles gave "Boys" to Ringo for sing, he was not sure about a song of a girl's group, so I don't know if he sing this song before.

here in his own words...While he may not have been as talented a vocalist as former bandmates Paul McCartney, John Lennon or George Harrison, Starr always did “his numbers” on stage. That tradition dates back to even before The Beatles, whom he joined just before they hit the big time in England in 1962. Before that, he played drums with another Liverpool group, Rory Storm and the Hurricanes. During that group's shows, the spotlight shined on Ringo for a popular segment called “Starr Time.” He'd sing and play drums, which from a technical point of view isn't the easiest thing for drummers to manage.

“When you don't know what you're doing, it's never difficult,” Starr said with a laugh. “But it was the only way. (I was told), 'This is what we do.' OK, so give me the microphone and I'm doing 'Alley Oop.' That was one of my big songs when I was with Rory ... 'Sticks and Stones,' 'Alley Oop,' 'Boys.' ”

and this was in a post......in a letter answering the question again...it got us a free autograph tho and he spelled morphed wrong....
Ever the showman, Rory who had already changed his name, suggested that I adopt a flashier stage name. Because of my penchant for wearing rings on my fingers, I naturally evolved into "Rings" and then quickly morfed into the more Western sounding "Ringo." My last name,Starkey, became shortened to Starr because it fit better with Ringo and so that my solo offering could be billed as "Starr Time." My big numbers included "Boys", "You're Sixteen," "Big Noise From Winetka," and "Alley Oop."
