You really were born in the "wrong decade," weren't you?
Well, Mr. Harburg has passed on so I can tell this story. During my residency, I was called to the ER to treat an older man who had a fish bone lodged in his epiglottic vallecula....near his vocal cords. I removed it via direct laryngoscopy and a Magill forceps with just a topical anesthetic spray. He had refused sedation. I know the procedure wasn't easly tolerated by him, but he was most cooperative and eager to have it removed. The fish bone had been there for more than 24 hours. Fortunately the bone was easily visualized and I quickly removed it.
As I was writing up his chart after his discharge, an RN asked me if I knew who I had just treated. I looked at his chart and answered "Yes, Edgar Harburg. The man with the fish bone caught in his throat." She proceeded to tell me that he was the lyricist (pardon my previous misspelling but I was excited that you mentioned Over The Rainbow) for all the songs in The Wizard Of Oz and Finian's Rainbow. This kind, quiet and unassuming man had never let on who he was.
The following day, on follow-up in the clinic, I was all shy and nervous during his appointment. I dropped two instruments! He asked me "What's the matter, doctor?" I babbled on about how famous he was. "Doctor," he interrupted, "did you know who I was last night?" "No, I didn't," I answered. He smiled at me and said "I'm glad."
