It was originally written in the late 50s by an Aussie singer Geoff Mack. Lucky Starr’s seems to be the earliest recorded version available. Australian place names do lend themselves to it quite well. It’s no mean feat to remember all those names in order and sing them quickly. And Lucky was still doing it in his 70s

Interesting; I had no idea. So are there different versions (i.e. American and Australian)? I can't imagine there's a Winnemucca, Australia.
