When we first moved to tiny Elko, NV, in our first week there we brought the kids to the one local museum, where I was surprised and delighted to see they had a big exhibit on Bing Crosby, with his music playing constantly in the background. Heck, "delighted" is an understatement—I was practically hyperventilating.

Turns out Bing used to own a ranch nearby and was in the town quite often. He was dubbed their unofficial mayor. He even used to go to our church.

It was so great. I dragged the kids back to that museum every few months.

Hmmm, I was thinking, I am clearly out of the loop on this because, last I heard—a long time ago, obviously—Jack Bruce was refusing to do a reunion because he was slamming Eric Clapton as an anti-Semite. Something (money, no doubt) must have changed his mind.

In graduate school a pal of mine and I used to jokingly put together fictitious lineups of bands with the most bitter musicians, Jack Bruce and Van Morrison being two of our proposed members, and those with the most inarticulate members, those being—in our opinion—Keith Richards and Eric Burdon. I'm not sure we ever got past two for either band.

One of the songs that helped me endure the October 2002 DC sniper shootings. Life was jittery enough after 9/11 and the anthrax mailings, and then the shootings started. Without Eric Clapton's music I'm not sure I'd have made it through. (This is back when we lived in the DC area, of course.)
