Best Beatles' songs in new NME poll
« on: March 18, 2015, 05:47:59 PM »

I think The Beatles maybe on the cover of the NME (is it still going?) this week.
I'll get a copy tomorrow if true.

It's a poll of the great (Brian Wilson.....actually he's the ONLY great from the list I've seen) and a whole load of people who either aren't great and/or aren't even famous in their own living rooms.

This is the Top 10.

1. Strawberry Fields Forever (prefer the flip!)

2. A Day In The Life

3. I Want To Hold Your Hand

4. Here Comes The Sun (good to see a George song so high)

5. Blackbird (really? Five? I'm not sure it would get into my 'White Album' Top 20!)

6. Tomorrow Never Knows

7. Across The Universe

8. While My Guitar Gently Weeps (good to see another George song so high, just not this one!)

9. I Am The Walrus (wouldn't get in my Top 5 from the MMT 2-EP!!!)

10. Hey Jude

The only one of those that would definitely get in my Top 10 would be the Charity/girls singing version of 'Across The Universe', but anything like this should get the group talked about.

I'll have a look for that obs, if only to see the NME's current definition of a "great"!

If they've included Paul Weller I can guarantee he voted for number 1; he seems to mention it in every interview of him that I've ever read - despite "Taxman" being the track he so audaciously ripped off.

Nothing all that unpredictable on the list (apart perhaps from "Blackbird" - I echo your comment on that one) and perhaps inevitably a smattering of their most wearisomely overrated numbers - though perhaps surprisingly we are spared the monster that is "Yesterday".

I think the only two of that ten which would make my own personal list would be numbers two and four.

Apparently the list stretches to 100 Beatles' songs and there is a solo Top 40 as well.

And it would seem that a 'Sgt. Pepper's' era photograph is on the cover, so once the plumber's been to fix the shower (!) I'll pop out to get a copy.

It's not my top 10. But at least it doesn't have all the obvious easy hits; let it be, yesterday,  something. Blackbird is a surprise. Nice enough song but nowhere near my top 10. And while I like while my guitar gently weeps, it doesn't rate quite that highly in their repertoire for me.  Tomorrow Never Knows is an interesting choice. Clearly people are thinking of the link with modern dance music. Again, it's not the type of song I'd put in my top 10, although in terms of their development as artistes I suppose it deserves to be recognised.

It's a strange poll!

With the best will in the world, and even donning my 'mono/early Beatles is best' hat, I can't make a strong case for 'Like Dreamers Do' (92)!

And with 'Wild Honey Pie', 'Now and Then' (the proposed 3rd new Anthology song) and 'You Know My Name' also in the lower reaches of the 100 you get the feeling that some of these 60s dodgers are trying a bit too hard!

Here are the others:

11. Hey Bulldog
12. In My Life
13. Let It Be
14. Something
15. 'Abbey Road' medley (you what?!)
16. Ticket To Ride
17. Paperback Writer
18. For No One
19. A Hard Day's Night
20. Come Together
21. Revolution
22. Yesterday
23. Twist and Shout
24. All You Need Is Love
25. We Can Work It Out
26. Norwegian Wood
27. Eleanor Rigby
28. Got To Get You Into My Life
29. Penny Lane
30. And Your Bird Can Sing
31. She Loves You
32. Taxman
33. All My Loving
34. I Saw Her Standing There
35. Michelle
36. Get Back
37. Dear Prudence
38. Here, There and Everywhere
39. Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds
40. Rain
41. Help!
42. Two of us
43. Nowhere Man
44. I Want You (She's So Heavy)
45. Can't Buy Me Love
46. Long, Long, Long
47. She's Leaving Home
48. Julia
49. You've Got To Hide Your Love Away
50. Day Tripper
51. With A Little Help From My Friends
52. Eight Days A Week
53. Because
54. Helter Skelter
55. Girl
56. Don't Let Me Down
57. Back in the U.S.S.R.
58. I Should Have Known Better
59. I'm Only Sleeping
60. Happiness is a warm gun
61. I Feel Fine
62. Love You To
63. Savoy Truffle
64. Mother Nature's Son
65. Yellow Submarine
66. The Long and Winding Road
67. Martha My Dear
68. You're Going To Lose That Girl
69. Drive My Car
70. Fool on the hill
71. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
72. Run For Your Life
73. I Want To Tell You
74. Wait
75. I've Just Seen A Face
76. I'm So Tired
77. Birthday
78. The Word
79. Glass Onion
80. Yer Blues
81. I Need You
82. You Really Got A Hold On Me
83. Do You Want To Know A Secret?
84. And I Love Her
85. Getting Better
86. Honey Pie
87. A Taste of Honey
88. Baby It's You
89. Oh! Darling
90. Real Love
91. Hello, Goodbye
92. Like Dreamers Do
93. Dig A Pony
94. I Me Mine
95. You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)
96. When I'm Sixty-Four
97. Anna (Go To Him)
98. Now and Then
99. Blue Jay Way
100. Wild Honey Pie

Maybe we should do our own poll?

'I Am The Walrus' would crack my top 10 but nothing else there would come close.

Bizarrely, I think my three favourite songs off 'Revolver' ('Good Day Sunshine', 'Dr. Robert' and 'She Said, She Said') are the only three that aren't in the list!

Yes I've just had to scroll through it three incredulous times to confirm that "She Said She Said" isn't there. Unbelievable!!

and no room for "If I Needed Someone", "The Night Before" or "Please Please Me"...yet "Blue Jay Way" and "Yellow Submarine" make the grade???

Pffftttt!!!!

We've done variants on the theme before, eg:  Beatles Best Song Elimination Game

But that was a few years ago.  It's a good idea, obs.  Start a DM Poll to answer the NME Poll.

And yes Blue Jay Way?!?  The song that I think made pretty much everyone's Beatles Worst of list on this site.

Wild Honey Pie isn't even a song. Just a muck around interlude.

I can't see Every Little Thing or No Reply on there either.

One of their best!  The sequence from Magical Mystery Tour was brilliant...

Blue Jay Way - The Beatles

And there was a major "clue" in the song...

Paul Is Dead - CLUE - Blue Jay Way

A true Beatles fan would not have waited in for him to arrive.

Instead, an explanatory note, a ladder and an unfastened catch would have been prepared so that, on your return, you could congratulate yourself on ensuring that he came in through the bathroom window

I reckon one had to be around in 1967 to truly appreciate this song.

You'll be pleased that the plumbers, there were two of them, came round and accomplished the task, Mr. Mustard!

On this poll, I'm not sure if all my Top 10 or 20 aren't in the list or whether I'm actually tailoring my list NOT to include what NME readers would have!!!

Off the top of my head, these would all be contenders for me.....

Lady Madonna
Ballad of John & Yoko
She Said, She Said (a truly staggering omission)
The Inner Light (sorry everyone!)
Love Me Do
Baby, You're A Rich Man
She Came In Through The Bathroom Window (Anthology 3 version)
Cry Baby Cry
Baby's In Black
I'm Down
Thank You Girl
Ask Me Why (actually any of the early b-sides)
I Will

NB - 'Now and Then' was chosen by the talent-free zone that is Liam Gallagher.

I was around in the 60s. But I don't remember a lot of it. Which means, according to the saying, I was really there!

Hmmm.... I wonder if they were burning matches and lifting latches on their way back home?

Anyway, about a year ago, my Beatle-mad cousin and I each decided to whittle our favourite Beatles tracks down to a top 100. Then halve it to a top 50. Then reduce that to a top 25. Then a top 20. And finally a top 10, which was eye-wateringly difficult of course....but I think I kept my list. I'll try and find it tonight. No doubt I'll want to change it!
