Some Kind of Plagiarism
« on: October 03, 2007, 09:58:06 PM »

Do you ever heared the songs, which are very similar to beatles songs?
My discovery is You Like Me Too Much (The Beatles, Help!) and Pass it On (The Coral,  Magic And Medicine).

Second discovery (not beatles) are Let's Spend the Night Together (The Rolling Stones) and California (Lenny Kravitz).

What can you say?

How about Jet and "Look What You've Done" We had a discussion at work about that when it came out in 2005. It reminded us of Sexy Sadie..not just the words, but the music in parts does too.

I'm listening to it now. Only the line in the chorus, the rest doesn't sound anything like it to me.

Yeah, that was my thinking too, but they kept on talking about it and I got convinced too.

Did anyone ever ask the artist? He may have done it deliberately, in homage?

It caught my attention straight off. They must have been aware of Sexy Sadie - I thought at my most charitable that it was at least a knowing nod. Surely an influence.

I listened, but am not hearing a similarity to a Beatle song here ... which one?

reminds me of George's infamous 70's lawsuit--the Chiffons claiming that his "My Sweet Lord" was a blatant rip-off of their 60's smash "He's So Fine"... irregardless of that verdict, I don't think Harrison consciously stole this melody. In fact, if you listen closely it's merely derivative. He relates his travails in the exhausting case in the humour-filled, self-penned "This Song" on his 1976 solo album "33 and a Third"

The Jet song seems pretty blatant (even the lyrics are similar to Sexy Sadie).  Other than that, it seems pretty lame lyrically.

I don't think there was anything deliberate about 'My Sweet Lord', but I cannot believe that he couldn't see the similarity as soon as he'd recorded it. He should have settled out of court very quickly, or given them a credit from the start. I doesn't matter (copyright wise) if it's deliberate or not.

A long discussion on that particular case here: http://dmbeatles.com/forums/b-harrison/m-1106659709/
Allen Klein played a stinky role in the matter.

Oh yes, I know. Didn't want to get into it big time again!
