The Beatles years are the most important moment in music history, by a MILLION light years.

The grunge scene in the early 90s, the birth of rock n roll in the 50s, and the punk movement in the 70s are also important as you said :)

Sometimes we do forget where the roots start. I'm guily of this also. Whether you like Elvis or not we all owe him a huge debt of gratitude For opening the door.  John Lennon said it best "without Elvis there would not have been any Beatles"

In my opinion, the first to push the barriers of music where mostly best at it, in contrast to all the wanna-bes who follow after someone has made success.

Personally I'm grateful for Bing Crosby, who was one of the first solo artists to make it big, without a band or orchestra in tow.

Of course, you can't mention "most important music history" without the Beatles. They pushed the barriers so far I can't imagine how it was before them.

Aw, talking of things that happened long before my time... Depressing ;)

I think the most important moment in music history was the release of Bill Haley's "Rock around the clock" in 1954. The was the birth of pop music.

what about etta james and henry???and i think chuck berry pushed rock and roll further than elvis.what about les paul inventing or perfecting the electric guitar?fm radio .did it help rock a lot?alan freeds arrest for promoting black musicians on the radio?johnny cash could he get credit?or carl perkins,he after all wrote blues suede shoes.
what rock has always been about is all of it.it cannot not be broken down to this or that because its all there.
i think a main battle for years is wether or not elvis was actually talented or just a good looking persona.
i like chuck berry over elvis.i consider elvis a talented PREFORMER and chuck a very talented MUSICIAN.
see the difference?elvis was a lousy musician i say.

The day my guitar string broke and I quit playing and singing.

Best day for rock music ever.

Since Elvis was a brilliant vocalist I also consider him a very talented musician.

Chuck Berry was very talented and one of the most important people in music history, but he peaked for just about 4 years... I guess because despite his enourmous talent he actually was pretty much a one trick pony... Hardly anything he did after 1960 did anything (except for that stupid "My ding-a-ling" song).

I also think that the start of MTV was very important for music. In a negative way, that is. Because when MTV started, you no longer needed any music talent. You no longer needed to tour your ass off to achieve anything. Heck, you didn't even need the talent to actually sing live anymore. One single catchy tune and a good looking face (and even if you didn't have that, sometimes a clever gimmick could do the trick) was enough to reach superstar status and the quality of music reached an all-time low (yes, possibly even lower than disco).
