In the early 70s I had trouble telling these two songs apart...

I think Rod Stewart needed that crib sheet so he wouldn't start singing Maggie May.   ;D

Good ol' Rod Stewart.  You could always count on him for great music videos...

But I liked Cat Stevens since I heard him sing this in 1968...

Yes, thanks, Barry; I knew all of that. It was played at my wedding and thus thoroughly researched ahead of time.  :)

When you posted the video, I figured you knew the whole backstory.

I've never cared for his version. I prefer the traditional renditions.

Until I heard Cat Stevens' interview on PBS in 1973, his was the only version I ever heard, Kathy.  Even the label on the LP said that he wrote all the songs...

What a "revelation" it was to hear him admit that the song was written 40 years prior.   ;D

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Backbeat and I heard that the film is being re released on DVD & Blue Ray on 6th May 2024. I’m not sure if it’s been re mastered but if anyone hasn’t got it it’s worth getting.

Yes, Kathy.  A hymn very appropriate for this weekend.
. . .
In an interview not long after, Cat Stevens explained the background of the song; a Christian hymn with words written by Eleanor Farjeon and set to a traditional Scottish tune "Bunessan" forty years before...

Morning has broken like the first morning
Blackbird has spoken like the first bird . . .

Yes, thanks, Barry; I knew all of that. It was played at my wedding and thus thoroughly researched ahead of time.  :)

I first heard it in 1971 on Cat Stevens' LP Teaser And The Firecat...

I've never cared for his version. I prefer the traditional renditions.
