Marnie

It's necessary to watch this movie a few times to fully understand what Alfred Hitchcock was trying to get across.

Yes, it took me a few years to understand what was actually wrong with Marnie.

I highly recommend this film.  Tippi Hedren, Sean Connery, Diane Baker, and Louise Latham acted brilliantly.

Alfred Hitchcock's cameo was very early in the movie so the viewer could concentrate on the film's character development...

Omigosh! I just read that Jane Asher was in The Masque of the Red Death and even brought Paul along during shooting. I had no idea—but then, the last time I saw this film was when I was 15, a good 6 years before I became a Beatles fan.

I'll definitely be rewatching it.

The short story was so creepy. We had to read it in 10th grade. That last line—"And the Red Death held sway over all"—still creeps me out. Stephen King used it in The Shining. Brr!

My ex is a distant relation of Poe's.  roll:)

I read The Cask of Amontillado in third grade, and that's always creeped me out, too. (Well, it IS Poe.  ;) ) If that was made into a movie, I'm not sure I'd want to see it. The story was unsettling enough.

It was made into a short film in 2011...

This film adaptation was the recipient of an Emmy Award for Best Educational Program.

There was a 1995 PBS version too...

Alfred Hitchcock's 1969 motion picture Topaz

It's October 1962...The Cuban Missile Crisis.  There were means of espionage other than U2 spy planes by which the United States was obtaining information.

It's time to read Leon Uris' novel again.

Hey Dmitry!  You'd get a kick out of the opening credits...

Friday night I watched North By Northwest

The ultimate case of mistaken identity and another Alfred Hitchcock classic.  The movie's climax came atop The Mount Rushmore National Monument...

Not far from you, Kathy.

Against the Ice, an Artic chiller tale à la The Terror and The North Water. I really liked this one.  I'm trying to stick to my budget and NOT order the book.

Took my boys to see the new Batman. Quite enjoyable. Batman doesn’t seem to have the endless military budget for accessories he enjoyed in the Nolan films. His bat mobile seems to be just a hotted up car rather than a high tech indestructible armoured car. And he’s not fighting out of space super villains like in the DC films.

It’s literally darker. Hard to think of a scene not at night or in a darkened room.

You mind need to watch the negative

I just watched Far From Men starring Viggo Mortenson. I love films like this, absorbing, quite slow, realistic. Films that take you there.

Girl With A Pearl Earing
2006

Scarlett Johansson stars as Griet, a young 17th-century servant in the household of the Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer (played by Colin Firth) at the time he painted Girl with a Pearl Earring (1665)
Very well acted and excellent direction.
Enjoyable film and quite educational.

I enjoyed this. It's not a classic but it's a true story told well. The acting is decent, not world beating.
It can get a bit slow, but being a "senior citizen" I've got to like slow films with atmosphere.
The ending was a bit rushed and unexplained, as in many films these days.

Carrie. Not the horror movie but the 1952 film based on Theodore Dreiser's novel Sister Carrie, one of my favorite books. Bet I've read it almost a dozen times. I love Dreiser.

The movie was a bit of a disappointment. I thought Eddy Albert and Laurence Olivier were great in their roles, but in my opinion Jennifer Jones as Carrie was horribly miscast. She was 'way too old for the part (reminded me of the cringe-worthy Leslie Howard as Ashley Wilkes in Gone With the Wind), plus I didn't care for her interpretation of the character. AND the screenwriters changed the ending, grrr. Plus the music seemed terribly overdone to me. The word bombastic comes to mind.

Overall, I'm not sorry I finally watched it. Now I should gear myself up to watch A Place in the Sun, which is based on Dreiser's An American Tragedy.

I haven't seen this yet, but I will. It looks deliciously ridiculous, also like it's one of those movies suited to goofy college-age drinking games: "Take a shot every time someone says 'unsinkable'!"   ha2ha
