Oh I take issue with that. Clearly what launched Kurt’s career was ….

My favourite KR film (apart from the Tarantino ones) is Bone Tomohawk. A great western.

Wow. Didn’t know he’d been in a film with Elvis. Cool.

This is my true Kurt Klassic

Mainly as I saw it in a New York cinema as an almost 18 year old. And it’s a fun tongue in cheek action flick.

He’s had a lot of great roles though.

And 16 years later he became Elvis...

There was a Titanic TV movie?  Is that the miniseries with Malcolm Stewart, George C. Scott and Roger Rees as the Three Stooges William Murdoch, Edward Smith and Bruce Dismay?

Very funny.  ;)

Sad because so many people lost their lives that night.

William Murdoch is off limits.  >:(   ;)

Perhaps a better way of putting it would be that he acted beyond the limits of his capabilities.

I would love to know how the conversation among Murdoch, Smith and Ismay really went if such an exchange happened at all.

Was Lightoller part of that discussion?  What did he say at the inquest?

Smith's idea of how he would have maneuvered the ship made a lot of sense to me.  But my only experience handling a boat is with my 13 foot Laser...

By the way, on that sailboat if I want to turn quickly to the left, it's "hard to port" or "hard-a-port."  I move the tiller all the way to the right or starboard and the rudder swings to the left.

When I've watched Titanic movies, the order Murdoch gave was "hard-a-starboard" and the helmsman at the ship's wheel turns it fully to the left.  The counter-clockwise turning of the wheel by the forward-facing helmsman would move the tiller to starboard causing the rudder to swing fully left and that would have turned the ship to port.  I don't see how reversing the props and slowing the ship down would help the ship turn to the left any faster with the orders Murdoch gave. But I understand that older commands used at that time were confusing and might have played a factor in what happened.  There must have been further orders given if Murdoch was maneuvering the ship to have it hit the iceberg broadside on the ship's starboard side.

I still feel that the events were a sad comedy of errors on the parts of all three men...Murdoch, Smith, and Ismay.

Where did you read this, and what did he say?

I was referring to the 1996 TV miniseries I posted earlier...

I know my Laser turns very quickly when at its top speed.  In light wind and going slow, it takes a long time to turn.  Smith's reprimand of Murdoch in that film may or may not have happened but his maneuvering tactics make a lot of sense to me.  He was a very experienced seaman.

I know you're speculating and not asking a question...

No, I was asking a question.  I'm not that well-read as to all of the events that occurred that night as I've only read A Night To Remember and I haven't read the inquest testimonies.  The TV miniseries showed Lightoller on the bridge.  I'm sure that scene was embellished for the TV audience.

Personally, I like how George C. Scott played the role of Captain Smith.  After all the gruffness he showed toward Murdoch and Ismay, he chastised himself..."I'm the master of this vessel and I have been too complacent!"  A good piece of acting right there.  Laurence Naismith, also a great actor, played the role of Captain Smith quite differently in A Night To Remember.  I liked his portrayal as well.

I believe only Murdoch and Sixth Officer Moody were on the bridge at the time of the collision.

I'll have to track down th George C. Scott version; I've never seen it. And I have to upgrade my copy of A Night to Remember; I have it only on VHS.

Both movies, in their entirety, are on YouTube, Kathy...

A Night To Remember

Titanic Part 1 (1996)

Titanic Part 2 (1996)

I have seen just about all the Titanic movies.  There was a cavalcade of fine actors who portrayed Captain Smith...

Otto Rippert   In Night and Ice  August 1912

Otto Wernicke   Titanic   1943

Brian Aherne   Titanic   1953

Laurence Naismith   A Night to Remember   1958

Harry Andrews   S.O.S. Titanic   1979

George C. Scott   Titanic   1996

Bernard Hill   Titanic   1997

David Calder   Titanic   2012

Kathy, for your viewing pleasure here is the 1912 film In Night and Ice, a documentary of sorts, released in August 2012...

Is it true that Captain Smith was washed overboard, rescued a passenger by taking him to a lifeboat and then refused to be rescued himself?
