I think without Brian's death, they would have lasted a bit longer. Paul wouldn't have taken so much control and p*ssed off the others!

I think they would've ditched Brian eventually.

Not if John had anything to say about it.
I have to say, I'm a bit divided with Brian. On the one hand, he did bring the Beatles to North America, but on the other hand, he made some absolutely horrid business decisons.

Only 2 John singles after '67! Couldn't he write great singles anymore, or couldn't he be bothered? And it was John who recorded and played live without the others.
I think John was a person who was easily led by those around him. I don't think Paul took over, more that John abdicated.
When you look at the pre '67 photos of John he's the slightly chubby, laughing Beatle. After that he's doesn't look like a happy chappy.
I think Q Magazine said it best "John was at his best when his drug of choice was rum and coke."
Drugs, Brians death, outside influences? I don't know. But something got to that guy.
RIP John

Very true. I've always felt that thr group would have fell apart at that point if Paul hadn't taken over. John was too preoccupied with drugs and Yoko to care about being a Beatle.

I say rigorous perfectionism, it's interesting to see that he's not really asking alot of the band. There's quite a bit of sloppy musicianship on the part of Lennon (I'm talking about Let It Be - Film here), where Paul's asking him to play the descending guitar break in "I've Got a Feeling" ("There shouldn't be any recognizable jumps," says Paul). Was John out-of-practice or just plain bored, or a combination thereof?

I think he was purposely playing it wrong to spite Paul.

mmm..John looks pretty bad in a few scenes though. It's something you don't notice until you look for it, but he really didn't look healthy.

Hmmm, well, all the drugs can't have been good for him.

It is good to revisit the movie, and find new angles to determine why it is what it is. My newest angle is to focus on George Harrison...consider that George had just come from an extended stay in America, where he was hanging out, partying, playing, and making music with some of rock's elite in LA. He appeared on a television show by himself, and that show was one of the more hip and happening shows at the time. George was rock royalty, basically. And those other musicians and characters in that LA scene were obviously treating him with some measure of respect for who he was.

Then, he comes back to record with the Beatles, and McCartney starts telling him how and when to play the guitar, and he has a batch of decent songs written that get jammed around early on and need a little attention and tweaking, but they're dropped and left off in favor of stuff like "Teddy Boy" and "Maggie May"???

I can understand why he'd be somewhat upset at the whole thing.

It's what he said right before they showed the Let it Be stuff. But maybe he was in LA before that. I thought he went to California during that whole summer of love thing. 1967.

it was Paul's untimely death and the replacement for him that caused the eventual break-up.

The end of their touring and Brian Epstein's death.  As much as I'd like to blame Yoko, the foundation had mucho huge cracks before she came along. I think the relationship with her and John got him out of the "Beatles Box" so to speak, Paul was trying to direct things to keep things moving, but it was all downhill by August 29, 1966 and the huge blow one year later on August 27, 1967.
