Apparently the Spotify website is having trouble processing all the subscription closures.
Where are you hearing that Moog ?

I just saw some Twitter conversations that Spotify were being overwhelmed and couldn’t process the cancellations. Might be rubbish of course.

I like how Neil made a stand a few years ago against artists continually promoting products like Beer, Coke etc He released a great song ...This Notes For You.

That was 1988 Kev.  Never liked the song, but the video was cool.

Screw Neil Young.  I cant stand when musicians, athletes, and celebrities use their platform to preach their politics and beliefs.  Young even went so far as to become an American citizen just so he could vote for the Democratic party.  He should have stayed in Canada so he could worry about his own country.  I dont like Youngs music enough to care much, but he just made my decision of keeping Spotify that much easier.

It is hard to know what to believe.

Someone did mention that the company he sold the rights of his songs to for $150 million probably aren’t too pleased he’s unilaterally pulled them from the worlds largest  streaming service.  ha2ha

He's certainly put his money where his mouth is.

I remember David Geffen suing him after signing him after the 2 albums he made, Geffen said the albums, Trans & Everybody's Rockin were not commercial enough, Geffen lost the case.
Elton John later said, You cant sue Neil Young for being Neil Young  ha2ha

I think they see it as him putting other peoples money where his mouth is. He’s already got the money.  ha2ha

I mean a lot of people will turn against him and look at this the way Todd does.

How much would Spotify have paid him per annum ?

True.

I’m not sure of the ins and outs of the deals. But when he sold his song catalogue he’s effectively sold most of the future income from them being played.  So the money from Spotify I’d imagine would mostly go to the catalogue owners.

Although it’s undoubtedly more complicated then that.

Artists can make an average of anywhere from $3,300 to $3,500 per 1 million streams.  Neil had around 6 million streams per month so it was pocket change for him anyways.  Spotify signed Joe Rogan to a $100 million dollar contract so it was a pretty easy business decision on their part.

6 million streams? Yeah that’s nothing nowadays.

I see Joni Mitchell had joined Neil. With all due respect to Joni I doubt Rogan is quaking at that.

With Joni this could snowball.
Apparently circa 100k subscriber's have cancelled so far.

Is Joni really that influential anymore?  The problem Neil and Joni have with their political protest here is that Spotifys core audience dont give a rats ass about either one of them.  The Beatles arent even a serious player in that arena.  Here's the artists that the core audience listen to.

Spotify has lost $4 billion of its value since removing Neil Young's music

Thats 12% of it's value.

I've seen quite a few people taking the p*ss out of Neil because he's old, (and now Joni) I think it's pretty pathetic.

Why are old people assumed to be senile by younger people ?

I agree, Kev.

When it comes to Neil Young, I've put what he's done in his life in the balance.  It tips decisively to the good.  As the father of three children with health disorders, he has the right to comment on health-related issues. His charity work in that field is worthy of commendation.  And he wrote what became an anthem to what I felt strongly about in 1970...

Yes Baz, Ive heard you mention Ohio before, pretty close to your heart. Ive heard the same said about his song Southern Man.

I read that Neil had Polio as a child and went through some horrible hospital treatments, had to learn to walk again afterwards, this was a few years before a vaccine was developed. So I guess he has pretty strong feelings about sharing a platform which promotes anti vax views.
