One more quick post on marching bands. . . I used to hate the uniforms my daughters had to wear; I prefer the traditional uniforms. Plus, their outfits reminded me of this horrible trip I took to Colonial Williamsburg when I was a kid. My sister and had gotten horrible sunburns at Virginia Beach the day before (this was before sunblock came into wide use), and we were in excruciating pain. My parents refused to let us rest inside the cool hotel room and insisted we all spend the day in Williamsburg. I ended up in the ER with sun poisoning. I will never go back there.  ha2ha

Anyway, my girls used to get really defensive about the uniforms and said the crowds love them and most men would doff their hats and people would put their hands over their hearts as the band approached, and sure enough, they did.

Right, Kathy.  The flag unfurled at that point in The Stars and Stripes Forever has been done countless times since Sousa wrote the march...






Playing the flute in that picture of the John Philip Sousa Band is Meredith Willson...






He went on to become a composer and wrote the music and lyrics for The Music Man in 1954.  When the movie premiered in Iowa in 1962, he took on Robert Preston's role of drum major...

That photo you posted jogged my memory, Barry. I used to tease my girls that the British, not the Americans wore red, so their uniforms should be blue. They shot back (clearly coached by the school) that the uniforms are historically accurate because apparently during the Revolutionary War the band musicians did indeed wear red. There is a formal explanation out there somewhere, because the band directors—who apparently heard these sorts of comments a lot—used to share it on the concert programs.

I've been wanting to buy a print of this awesome Ken Marschall painting of the sinking of the Lusitania for about 20 years now. I might splurge and finally get one.

I love this painting so much I had to share it.
