Kathy, I'm sure you remember this scene from Alfred Hitchcock's Saboteur...

No, Barry, I've seen several of Hitchcock's films, but not Saboteur. I'll add it to my watchlist.

I have heard there were rumors at the time that the fire on Normandie was caused by sabotage.

She came to such an ignominious end; it makes me genuinely sad. It's not even like she sank mostly intact, like the Titanic, or was able to have some of her gorgeous interiors salvaged, as with the Olympic, or even was accessible to divers seeking smaller items, as with the Andrea Doria. (Well, the Andrea Doria's not really accessible to divers, but that's a topic for a different forum.)

She was just flat-out ruined by the fire and then by sitting on the bottom of the Hudson.  :(

It's one of Alfred Hitchcock's best espionage movies, Kathy.  It's a case of mistaken identity and the accused making a cross-country trek in order to clear himself ending at a well-known national monument.  Hitchcock would use the same plot elements seventeen years later in North By Northwest, another one of my favorite Hitchcock films...

Another reason I like Saboteur is because the protagonist and I share the same first name.  :)

I share your feelings about the Normandie.  What a beautiful ocean liner she was!  She could have been of valuable service in the Allied war effort.

Now that kind of stings, too: I hate to think of her converted from a pleasure ship to a troop transport. But at least she still would have existed.

Your post sparked my memory, Barry, and I just pulled this volume off my shelves:

For several years I locked away my ocean liner books to keep them away from crumbs, spilled juice, etc. Now that the kids are gone I am free to enjoy them. (Although I'd rather have my three back home, and little again.  :-\ Guess one can't have the best of both worlds.)

It's estimated that all the ocean liners converted to troop transports shortened WWII by one year saving many lives.

Those ocean liners converted to hospital ships hold a special place in my heart.

Sacrifices were made by the Allied Countries and their populations on many levels during the World Wars.  Ocean liners were part of those sacrifices.

The Normandie never got the chance to serve in the war effort.  Kathy, do you know if the ultimate plan was to reconvert her to an ocean liner and return her to France after the war?

Went to my first WVU game in a long time.  Forgot how much fun it was.  Love partying it up before games.

No, I was not aware of that. I need to read more on her. I see John Maxtone-Graham, a well-respected author in the field, has a book on her, but it's listed at something like $97 USD on Amazon, and even I can't justify that expenditure right now.

Great photos, Todd; looks like so much fun!

The last WVU game I went to was back in 1993. It was lashing down rain, and our team (Missouri) was getting trounced, but it was still fun. No tailgating, though, because of the weather.  :(

Morgantown must be gorgeous this time of year.

Nice, Todd!

Did the home team win?

Actually they did.  They barely hung on to beat #15 Virginia Tech.

It is pretty, but it was hot.  It was 90 degrees in the stadium.  We left at halftime or we wouldnt have made it.

Ah, I missed the "if" in your post the first time around, Barry. No, I'm not sure what the ultimate plans for the Normandie were, but I'd be curious to find out. All I know is that the U.S. seized her as she was docked in NYC after the Vichy regime allied themselves with the Germans. I don't know if they planned to re-convert her and return her after the war.

Now you've piqued my curiousity. . .

This little guy has helped me through so many traumas. . . After my son moved out in July 2019 I spent more than a week crying in bed, and he just cuddled up next to me, no questions, no judgment, just unconditional love. It's like he knew exactly what I needed.
