Wow that's really awful Emmi. Why are they making you do this? Is it in your choir class or something?
I don't recall having to sing spiritual songs in school, just really old boring ones. Mostly patriotic like you're a grand old flag stuff like that. Sorry to hear of that, it sounds really irritating.

Yes, it's for choir. And my school is a public school in a small town that didn't even allow us to see Obama's speech to the students! Which I REALLY wanted to see.

Heck I went to a catholic school and in band we mostly played classical/folk/jazz! We only did one "spiritual" song, and it was for a warm up because it was mostly scales!

All this talk about religious hymns reminded me how back in my old school (which wasnt religious at all) we had to say christian hymns and praises... and I am Jewish! (My teacher was not very errr... nice)
