Beach Boys' influence on Paul?
« on: April 28, 2009, 11:16:49 PM »

I'm just wondering about the Paul songs out there that have a Beach Boys' influence to them.  "Back in the USSR" and "Penny Lane" are two examples, I think.

"Dear Boy" sounds very Beach Boy-like to me with really brilliant and beautiful background vocals and harmonies.

I'm sure there are more songs like this but I came up with these three off the top of my head.

Joost!  Where are you?   ;)

I'm gonna state the obvious with 'Back In the U.S.S.R.'

'The Back Seat Of My Car' is a blatant Brian Wilson styled song in my opinion.

It's often been said and written that Paul wrote "Here, There & Everywhere" after hearing "God Only Knows", although there aren't really any similarities between the songs.

Personally, I think that "She's Leaving Home" (which happens to be one of Brian Wilson's favorite songs) sounds a bit Pet Sounds-ish.

I always thought (sure I read it somewhere) the influence between GOK and HT&E was more in the production. Paul was keen to capture the clean, precise sounds he heard on the Beach Boys song, and which became a bit of a trademark on his work.

Recently, I heard "God Only Knows" for the first time as sung by both Brian Wilson and Paulie.  Wonderful!  My favorite BB song and my favorite Beatle all in one song, too cool.

Did you know Brian Wilson and Paul McCartney did a duet in 2004? It's called "A Friend Like You" and it's on Brian's album "Gettin' In Over My Head". The song's really not all that great, but it's cool to hear them singing together.

^  Yes, I've heard that song before.  It's actually quite catchy and charming.
