Just rewatched this I liked it so much.
About a rock drummer who suddenly goes deaf.
Really touching film.

I really enjoyed Sound of Metal. Great acting.

RE: Whiplash, I liked that one so much I bought it:

Great film
It actually won 3 academy awards one of which was to JK Simmons who played the teacher.
It showed the lengths serious Jazz musicians go to, to master their craft.

J.K. Simmons played General Starkey in the 2020 iteration of The Stand. Great actor! I still cringe watching his Whiplash scenes. He reminds me of my first editing professor, who wasn't quite that mean, but still, he had most of us cowering in our seats.

An old favorite: Shattered Glass, about the fall from grace of New Republic journalist Stephen Glass, who was caught having fabricated numerous stories. May sound dry, but it's really not. It's an interesting portrayal not only of a troubled young man but also of journalism.

Just watched 1922, based on the Stephen King novella of the same name. I enjoyed it. Thomas Janes's flattened inflection came across as a bit affected, but that was only a minor distraction.

Palmer
2020
Story of the man who comes out of prison and struggles a bit until he gets his life together with the help of a small boy.
Justin Timberlake stars but don't let that put you off he's quite good in this.

This isn't a movie, but I was enthralled last night to stumble across a Titanic series on Amazon Prime, done in 2017 and featuring the most trustworthy authors in the field: Ken Marschall, Parks Stephenson, Senan Molony, Bill Sauder, and more.

Amazon modified this series so that each "episode" comprises all the interview excerpts from a single historian; hence, the first episode is all Ken Marschall, with his discusions of survivor Winnie Troutt, the Marconi room, the Turkish baths, and so on. Then the next episode is on Senan Molony on varying topics. It's an unusal way to set up the series and may not appeal to viewers the way, say, an episode with all the historians' discussions interleaved, but I love it, although it's hard not to jump ahead because I am so eager to "hear from" each author.

Lots of new and exciting information has come to light since the early 2000s, which is when I took a long hiatus from the discussion boards because I had three kids under age 4 plus we were continuing to move from state to state.

I was so happy to stumble across this last night that I had to text my daughters and my friends. No doubth their eyes were glazing over. ("Here goes Kathy, nattering on about ships again. . .")  ha2ha

Anyway -- I would strongly recommend this for anyone who has even a passing interest in the ship.

Yes it is, Kathy.  We would see that rocking horse again at the end of the motion picture...

I assume that's from A Night to Remember? I haven't watched it in ages. I have it on VHS somewhere.

If it is from ANTR, that's ironic given that (after Cameron's film) it's supposed to be the most technically accurate. The Titanic didn't have any children's playrooms.

Yes, Kathy, those pictures are from A Night To Remember.  I'm surprised there were no children's playrooms aboard the Titanic.

I just have to throw one more thing out there: Senan Molony discussed that evidence has come to light that the survivors in the lifeboats not only did not return to pick up people in the water but likely doused the lifeboat lamps to discourage anyone from swimming toward them. So sad, and yet it's hard to pass judgment.

Calvary
2014
A wonderful film starring Brendan Gleeson as a Catholic priest, the film is set in Ireland present day and is so easy to watch, there is a bit of quirkiness but an underlying dark side to this movie.
I thoroughly recommend it, Brendan is a wonderful actor and I've loved him ever since I saw the movie ..In Bruges.

Especially when, as I understand, many of the lifeboats were not full. Wasn’t there a woman who forced the crewmen steering one fo the lifeboats to return to the site to look for survivors?

Fifth Officer Lowe was the only one who went back, but he did so of his own accord (i.e., not prompted by a passenger). And you're correct; most of the lifeboats were not full.

I'm sure some of the other ship's officers would have gone back, but I believe most of them were swept off the ship as she went under. The second officer (Lightoller), for example, spent the early morning hours standing atop an overturned collapsible.
