Imagine is a great song for its content and that is why it will never be beaten. Especially those who are cosmopolitans love it, i think.
then gimme some truth has got to be its equal...

Wow! But George really was wittier than Paul, it`s that he just didn`t push himself forward all the time, he kept a low profile but when he was given a chance... And now i think you all will kill me, while George`s fans will keep a low profile...

What I meant is that it's not generally looked at as a "solo" (or post-Beatles) effort.  I knew the song "Yesterday" way before I became a Beatles fan and honestly never knew that it was a song that Paul McCartney wrote alone.  As I said, I think most average listeners would label "Yesterday" as a "Beatles" song and not a "McCartney" song, although it was a solo work on his part.  Hope that clears things up...
they were already clear miss....i was just bantering...i agree i thought for some time it was the group but fully accepted that he did it alone when i found out...it is what he does...shine as a soloist...they say the music came to him and he played it to g m and he suggested it was so pretty that paul had to put lyrics to it...

I`ve got a question, do they have to pay to play certain songs on the radio? Maybe that`s why they play one and the same song all the time?

I don't know. One of my favorite Lennon songs is Whatever Gets You Through the Night. I don't know why, cuz I don't really like jazz music on it's own. But when you put John Lennon with it....dare I say it...it's alright.

They're not supposed to (remember payola?), but the question might be worth asking again.  ;D

But the reason you hear the same songs over and over again is owing to the entrenched conservatism of most radio programmers, I think: they stay with the familiar and what's known to work. They only look for other songs to play (or go to a new - and as equally rigid- format) when their ratings start to drop.  :)

Currently in the United States, songwriters are paid royalties when their songs are played on the radio.  I remember that last year, performers sought compensation but I'm not sure what became of their attempts.

Imagine is one of those one of a kind songs. It touches people. Simple pop tune or whatever, it provokes emotion in people. They love it. Like so many of Paul's so called "schmaltzy" pop tunes. There's something genius in that and criticism is often short sighted. How simple can it really be if it is able to touch so many people of different musical tastes?? Somehow, he hit on something big. He wrote a true classic. This one will be around for a long time.

Upon its release, any time Imagine was played on the radio, the room would suddenly become quiet and people listened intently.  This went on for weeks.

It wouldn't surprise me that if you went up to somebody and asked them to name one John Lennon song, the answer you'd get most of the time is Imagine  :-/ That's sad.

Why is that sad? It's an amazing song. It gets recognized. That's how it should be. Ask the same people if they could name a solo Mick Jagger tune and see what you get. The fact that MOST people of any age or musical taste could name it and its artist is an astonishing accomplishment. That's nothing to be sad about.

I think I see some musical snobbery going on in this thread because we think we know better or something.

"Silly Love Songs" is clearly the best solo Beatles song , it's a proper two finger job to the world ?
Imagine is a "Big Lie"  it delivers nothing but false hope .
It's got a lot in common with Ebony & Ivory , in that it try's to smooth over the fact that "Homo Sapiens" are "Killers" who never learn ?
Just take a long look at what we are doing to our "Planet " Imagine won't save us from the storm thats coming , we will all be singing "Yellow Submarine" as the water laps around our necks ?

For me the best 10 solo songs are :

1. My Sweet Lord
2. # 9 Dream
3. Silly Love Songs
4. Back Off Boogaloo
5. Coming Up
6. Watching The Wheels
7. When We Was Fab
8. Photograph
9. Instant Karma
10. Maybe I'm Amazed

I doubt any song is gonna save the world. And so what if we self destruct. Clearly if we get to that point, we deserve it. And the Earth is just fine. It'll be here long after we're gone.

Obviously though Imagine strikes a chord in people. That's all I'm talking about. The message may be a bit naive, but I think he knew that going in. He's clearly just making a point. And he DOES point out the fact that most of us probably can't imagine it. It's got a bit of pessimism in it if that's what it takes. And it's more than just lyrics. It's the tune, the voice, the delivery. It works. That's all.

And to compare it to Ebony and Ivory is just so wrong. Sorry.  ??)

I disagree Sandra Imagine and Ebony & Ivory are one and the same , they give false hope of a better world .
I would like it to be different but i just don't see it .
Watching The Wheels is much more true , thats what most of us do just sit there ?
