That's a great version! I hadn't realized Johnny Mathis covered it. I'll have to add it to my playlist.

Of course, when it comes to winter/holiday songs, I always go with my beloved Bing:

That's because Kathleen lives in North Dakota which isn't too far from the North Pole.    :)

They're expecting snow up there!

For your hives, Moog, there's...

Kathleen, early in Perry Como's career, he sang with Ted Weems and his Orchestra...

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9TzcNygn3JM" target="_blank" class="aeva_link bbc_link new_win">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9TzcNygn3JM</a>

1936

At the Decca recording session, Ted Weems was told to "get rid of that kid who's singing.  He sounds too much like Bing Crosby."  Bing Crosby also recorded for Decca at that time.  Before Perry Como could say anything, Ted Weems responded "Como is part of the session or it's over!"  Perry Como was 24 years old at the time.

I'm with you, Moog; I hate when the seasons get rushed. It's just that, as Barry noted, in North Dakota Christmas-type weather arrives very early. We woke up to snow today. :(

Interesting; thanks! I'm familiar with Perry Como's holiday songs. I had no idea Johnny Mathis recorded some. And please do call me Kathy, Barry. "Kathleen" makes me feel like I'm at the doctor's office. (Ha ha, get it?  ;D I'm so clever.)

Okay, then, Kathy.  But Kathleen sounds so much prettier.  :)

I saw Perry Como on occasion in the early 1960s when he would be in town to meet with Nick Perito who was his arranger and orchestra conductor on his TV specials.  Nick Perito lived across the street.  Perry Como was always friendly and never hesitated to sing a song on request.  What a beautiful voice he had!

You and I are on the same wavelength in that regard, Barry: My younger daughter's name is Madeleine (after St. Madeleine Sophie Barat), but she usually goes by "Maddie." But it's such a beautiful name that I usually avoid the abbreviated version in favor of the full name. She prefers the full version herself, but so many people have trouble pronouncing it and spelling it that she eventually got tired of having to correct everyone.  :-\  (Her middle name is Clare, after St. Clare of Assisi, founder of the Poor Clares, because we were in the middle of a bankruptcy when I was pregnant with her. Never hurts to find some humor in things.)

Nice! My parents bumped into Al Martino once in a restaurant in the 1,000 Islands but did not speak with him. Perry Como did indeed have a beautiful voice.

Which leads me to the next section:

At the Decca recording session, Ted Weems was told to "get rid of that kid who's singing.  He sounds too much like Bing Crosby."

Ha! I accidentally mistook Perry Como or Bing Crosby just a few years ago.  icon_redface

I quite like snowy climates, and there’s nothing like a cold snowy Christmas, but I admit getting it from October would be a bit much.

Perry Como admitted that Bing Crosby was a major influence in developing his voice and style of singing.  He once said: "You either sang like Bing, or you didn't eat."

Yes, he did.  I've heard the Kol Nidre prayer sung every year in the evening just before Yom Kippur began.  I was even in the cantor's choir as an alto until my voice changed at age fifteen.  I've listened to many famous cantors and singers singing Kol Nidre over the years but one stands out over all others...

The prayer is in Aramaic, a dialect of Hebrew.  Perry Como sang it flawlessly and with great feeling that only a devoutly religious person can convey.

By the way, if you're curious as to the language Jesus spoke, it was Aramaic, the dialect spoken in the Nazareth region.

Yes, thanks, Barry. The film The Passion of the Christ was spoken in Aramaic. Thank God (ha ha) for subtitles.

I haven't seen that movie.  I heard about it though.  I wouldn't need subtitles.   :)

I learned Hebrew in yeshiva and they also taught us Aramaic as many of the commentaries of The Bible were written in Aramaic.

Jesus would have spoken Aramaic in The Galilee and Hebrew when in Jerusalem.  I'm curious to see if the movie showed that.

Hebrew and Aramaic are similar, the major difference being in noun formations and verb declensions.  It's amazing what a young mind can learn and what I've retained over the years.

Kol Nidre was originally written in Hebrew but transcribed to Aramaic because it sounded better when sung.  There are some grammatical mistakes in the Aramaic text which were no doubt done on purpose to make the chant sound better.

Perhaps Beethoven heard Kol Nidre being sung as his String Quartet No.14 in C-sharp minor - Op.131 - 6th Movement sounds reminiscent of the prayer...

I remember that song too, Kevin.  It was a #1 song here and in Great Britain too in 1958...

So what if we strayed off topic.  This is, after all, a music website.  :)
