Suggest  some music you think nobody would know
« on: August 03, 2005, 07:09:14 PM »

In other words, try and turn others on to a band or artist that you dig who not many know about.

I would say Marc Teamaker http://www.marcteamaker.com but I don't think there are any clips on that site... try www.cdbaby.com for the clips.

He's my choice, I'll elaborate more on why and wherefore later.

Nellie McKay. her debut CD came out in '03 or '04 I think and she got insanely good reviews. They called her a "living breathing White Album" and she's supposed to be the next Norah Jones. She's better than Norah, IMO, because of her stellar voice and her smart and funny lyrics. Norah is just boring, whereas Nellie is just really interesting and cool. I don't know any links to download her music, just try Limewire or something.

What sort of style is she coz Norah is a jazz/country sort of style and when you say a living breathing white album, it's hard to get an idea when compared to Norah Jones. But I am intrigued nonetheless.

Marc Teamaker is a guy from NYC and he sounds like a mix of Neil Finn, The Beatles, Traffic and Paul Weller with a touch of soul too. But only a touch. He has released 3 albums and 1 ep and each album has been progressively better than the other. His first album was called "Lust For Wanda" and is quirky and Beatlesque but very acoustic. His second album "Ping!" is a fuller sound with some more electric instruments and outside musicians like a flutist and lap steel guitar too and finally his newest album is "Marc Teamaker" and this is his best IMO much more richer sounding and very full, it uses more electric than acoustic instruments like organs and electric guitars with some sax and flute on songs too.

But here are the links for clips of 90% of his songs:

Ping! (2000)

Yep, it is sort of a jazz type music. All the themes of the songs are different- everything from the shallow state of society to dog walking.

Zoli Band.

They were a semi-acoustic pop side project by members and roadies of the hardcore punk band Ignite. They made one self-released CD (which probably sold just a few hundred or at best a couple of thousand copies), which is one of my all-time favorite albums. Their song "Painful" (which was loosely based on Dexy's Midnight Runners' "All In All") is one of my all-time favorite songs.

"FLASH" sounded like a cross between Yes and Genisis! They were from around 72 Capitol label.

Southern Culture On The Skids - A cross between the B-52's and country. I love them and i'd recommend 'Plastic Seat Sweat' as their best.
