And it's not just celebrities. History is littered with wacko kings and rulers. When a person gets put in a position where they are surrounded by people trying to curry favor, they rapidly lose perspective. It's the rare person who realizes this and recruits people to help maintain their sanity.

For example, Michael J. Fox asked his brother to beat him up if he became too much of a jerk. And he did-- and his brother beat him up! Threw him down the stairs at one point, if I'm remembering Fox's autobiography correctly. Michael recalls the incident as a much-needed restoration of sanity.

Of course, we can't all have kind brothers to whup our butts when we get out of line. I think the salt mines will work just fine.

Interesting question. I think an explanation could be that people set goals for themselves, reach them, and then realize that they aren't perfectly happy like they thought they would be. If you have a crappy job, a house that's falling apart and a wife you can stand, than you at least can dream of a better life. But what if you're famous, you're a multi-millionair and people worship the ground that you walk on but you still don't feel satisfied? I can imagine that feeling unhappy when you already have everything you ever wanted can, in a way, be worse than feeling unhappy when you've got nothing...

Nah, I think that's too easy... In Michael Jackson's case for instance I think it has a lot to do with his abnormal childhood.

People have nervous break downs in all walks of life. You just don't hear about it. I think if there was some sort of statistical analysis done, the ratio of crazy people amongst celebrities and non-celebrities would probably be pretty close. I do think though that the more access you have to money, drugs, multiple partners, the more temptations you have and the more chance there is of losing yourself. All the boundaries disappear. But again, you don't have to be famous for that. Look at all the sons and daughters of celebrities or the super rich who are not famous yet end up messed up. Having too much money and zero responsibility isn't always the greatest thing. Getting everything you want the second you want it isn't healthy. You need to have some sort of self worth in life. And when you earn something, it's much more fulfilling. This stuff can mess with the head. Conversely, there are a lot of messed up people who have nothing. That came from homes where they weren't given anything. Including a feeling of self worth. Which is probably what it all comes down to on some level.

someone said once that every person will be famous for at least 5 minutes in their life. That means that everyone of us will be mental for at least 5 minutes in our lives  
The famous may seem mental to the non famous but the non famous may seem mental to the famous, so it all depends which side of the mirror you look from.
