The legendary broadcaster, who at the time was working on a current affairs programme called Tonight, said he never had to battle with producers apart from when he wanted to cover the Fab Four.
He said: "I was just getting my stuff ready to fly to New York and the producer called to say they didn't have enough staff so were going to pull me off."
He continued: "Someone in the Tonight office had received an invitation to go with this outfit to America, these four kids who I'd never seen before. They looked a bit scruffy but they seemed quite pleasant and I thought, I'm sure it will be all right.
"That was the only big regret. I would have been thrilled when I realised what I'd come across."
Alan Whicker's Journey Of A Lifetime begins on BBC Two on Wednesday March 25.
