I really like it, great song. I wouldn't say my favourite off Please Please Me though because that would have to be Baby Its You

I love it. Great Ballad and one of the highlights of Please Please Me. It's one of my top ten favourites covers by the guys, incluiding all the stuff released on the Anthologies.

I have always LOVED this song!!
I prefer the older songs and John's voice is just heavenly.

Al Bundy had it in his head (not the Beatles version of it, though) and he went nuts trying to figure out the name of it.

Mmm mmm him.......

Go with him.......

That's all he knew about it.

Poor Al!

It's a fantastic lead vocal by John.

Also - Baby It's You....I love the ending "Don't leave me all alone..come on home.."

This is an absolutely BRILLIANT song, one of my all-time favourites. Written by the late great Arthur Alexander - also much missed.

The Beatles also covered three other tracks by Arthur Alexander -
Where Have You Been All My Life (Live at the Star Club 1962)
A Shot of Rhythm and Blues (Beatles at the BBC)
Soldier of Love (Beatles at the BBC) - if you like Anna, you'll love this track too - absolutely awesome!!

It was Arthur's phrasing that hugely influence John Lennon's All I've Got To Do, from the With The Beatles album, and his songs also prompted John to start using the word 'girl' in his lyrics instead of the more popular 'baby'.

I think I wrote more about Arthur Alexander in the "Fith Beatle" section last year. If like me, you are interested in discovering more about the Beatles' influences, you should seriously check out Arthur Alexander - a major influence on John's early songwriting.

I thoroughly reccommend this album:

1. Anna (later covered by the Beatles)
2. You're The Reason
3. Soldier Of Love (later covered by The Beatles)
4. I Hang My Head And Cry
5. You Don't Care
6. Dream Girl (later covered by me - The End!!!)
7. Call Me Lonesome
8. After You
9. Where Have You Been All My Life (later covered by The Beatles)
10. Shot Of Rhythm And Blues (later covered by The Beatles)
11. Don't You Know It
12. You Better Move On (later covered by The Rolling Stones)
13. All I Need Is You
14. Detroit City
15. Keep Her Guessing
16. Go Home Girl (later covered by Ry Cooder)
17. In The Middle Of It All
18. Whole Lot Of Trouble
19. Without A Song
20. I Wonder Where You Are Tonight
21. Black Nights

You can buy the album here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000009L1/qid=1131663664/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_11_1/026-0752263-7220425

Of course I like Soldier Of Love. All the early stuff of the guys (their covers too) are very good, some of my favourites songs are covers.
It seems a very good album.

^Didn't know that. Very interesting, The End.

All I've got to do - is one of my favourites, for the tone and phrasing mentioned.
Great information Al, I'm gonna see if I can get it tomorrow

Cool! I don't think you'll be disappointed! Great to hear the original of Anna with piano playing George's guitar part and the strings that many have said should have been applied to the Beatles version (no way that was ever gonna happen on their first LP though!!)

... we must remember that it was not only their very first LP, it was recorded in one day (no place to strings, no!) and because of the number one (or two) hit Please Please Me single, so no time to plan things.

'Anna' is a great song. I have always been impressed by the selection of cover songs they chose, mostly obscure, many by girl groups of the day. I'll look into the Arthur Alexander collection. Its always cool to check out things you haven't heard before. I think he also did some songs with Johnny 'Guitar' Watson in the mid-late 50's.

Great version. Its funny how those early cover versions are now the defining versions of the songs. Things like Twist and Shout. Most people think the Beatles wrote it.
The only other good example I can think of would be the Stones and Time is on My Side.

"Please Mr. Postman" is another example of a great song released by a girl band and made more famous by the "Beatles".

Totally agree!!

How about Twist and Shout then - the Beatles OWN that big time! The Isley's version is absolutely brilliant too, but in my opinion it's so different you can't really compare the two. Both of those versions do not compare with the original by the Top Notes though. It was prodused by the legendary Phil Spector and is a pile of crap! :)

Well, the guys made some of the defenitive versions with some of the covers they recorded: Twist And Shout, Money (That's What I Want), Long Tall Sally, Rock And Roll Music and Kansas City/Hey, Hey, Hey are better than the originals and remain as the best versions available today IMO. Almost every time I heard these songs wherever I were they're the versions the guys made and not the original.
Even Please Mr Postman, Roll Over Beethoven and Everybody's Trying To Be My Baby are better than the originals.
Good pupils and better masters.  ;D

I bought "Anna (Go To Him)" by Arthur Alexander in the fall of 1962 when I was 16.
