Just saw Whiplash, a film from 2014 about a young man training to be a jazz drummer and his hellacious instructor. It was great, but very intense. I had to turn the volume down at the end because I couldn't bear the tension.

It's nice to get wrapped up in something that takes you away from The Hell That Is 2020.  ;)

I liked Whiplash a lot, but it was tense.

I'm looking forward to seeing Unhinged and The New Mutants.  Heard The New Mutants was trash, but i'm a comic book nerd and I need to see it regardless.

It actually won 3 academy awards one of which was to JK Simmons who played the teacher.

It was well deserved; he was great. I thought some of my grad school professors were terrifying, but he made them look like shrinking violets.

I'm looking forward to seeing Unhinged and The New Mutants.

Unhinged was good; like Whiplash, it was tense. (In a different way.) It was more violent than I expected -- not bloody, but I jumped a few times. The sign of a good movie!

Watched a great 2020 film called Waves.

The epic emotional journey of a suburban African American family as they navigate love, forgiveness and coming together in the wake of a tragic loss.

Superb film.
Written, co-produced and directed by Trey Edward Shults.

Forgot to mention the music is excellent in this film, mainly Frank Ocean and Kanye West. It has a lot of soundtrack.

On The Rocks

Bill Murray plays the father of Rashida Jones in this flick and they go snooping around because they think Rashidas husband is cheating on her.

Terrible.  Watch at your own risk.

We actually just watched this film I agree it's terrible sort of reminded me of one of those daytime TV movies I'm surprised as a24 movies are usually very good.
Bill Murray plays himself as usual.

Blackthorn.
A slow western movie. Sadly the last starring role for Sam Shepard, one of my favourite actors.
It entails some revisionist history, what if Butch Cassidy hadn't been killed in Bolivia but lived to be an old man.

Great film, you can get your teeth into it.
Sam even gets to sing.

The New Mutants

Wasnt the dumpster fire everybody was going on about, but it wasnt great by any means either.  Average comic book/superhero movie.

On another note - The Queens Gambit (netflix)

Awesome.  Literally fantastic.  Same girl who played Magik in the New Mutants handles the lead role here as a fictional chess player trying to be the best in the world.  Highly recommended.

You reminded me!  I watched The Wanderers a few days ago.  Life in the Fordham section of The Bronx in November 1963...

Mank
2020
1930s Hollywood is reevaluated through the eyes of scathing wit and alcoholic screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz as he races to finish "Citizen Kane."

Director: David Fincher
I only got through one hour of this film, absolute garbage the only positive thing about it was Gary Oldman's acting
Couldn't even see any shadow of a story.
Don't bother.

I watched 2 Jurassic Park movies on A&E yesterday and today.  Also, earlier in the week, I saw The Black Knight Returns.  Kind of interesting.  It's like Batman retired due to age but returned 10 years later when in his 50s to combat another amazing super-powered villain.  Meaningless entertainment but entertaining nonetheless.  I like seeing CGI-type dinosaurs because I'll never see the real thing.  You'd have to find a time machine to take you back about 75 million years, I think.  One observation about Jurassic Park - the dinosaurs seem too smart and seemingly can think like or outthink humans.  Also, the main characters in the film survive massive dinosaur attacks in which many other humans are killed for food or maybe for fun.  That's the thing about your leading characters.  You have to keep them alive.  And you need some sort of love interest to be occurring among them.  So, my next watch will be something that appears on cable.  We'll see.

I forgot to say, Barry, that if you like "It's a Wonderful Life" then you will no doubt love that TZ episode "Changing of the Guard" I mentioned in a different thread.

Thank-you, Kathy.  Remember, SyFy and Decades are both running Twilight Zone Marathons for New Year's this year.  I know you'll be watching.  Unfortunately The Changing of the Guard is not included in either.

I wonder why they decide to remake the classics...
