..if there WERE no Beatles or Stones
« on: October 27, 2007, 08:38:27 PM »

I know this a form of Beatle heresy (and perish the thought..) But....what if there were no Beatles or Rolling Stones..

what artist(s) would you chose as your TOP faves and why?...(in order of importance to you) It doesnt matter how many you chose:

(mine)

1) No question, Bob Dylan stands on top. Admittedly, his voice is music's suckiest--but he is the greatest folk/rock poet of the age. There ARE no runners-up in this genre. Woody Guthrie? ..maybe..but not on Zimmerman's level (although I do have to say I love Arlo, but even he can't touch the man from Hibbing, Minn.) Dylan's corrosive social criticism and hammer -blow wit are unparalled.

2) The Kinks--Ray Davies is the undisputed King of the 3 minute pop song (remember, this is assuming we're living in a non-Beatles/Stones universe  :) Who could top "Lola" or "Village Green Preservation Society" ..?  I'll tell you who...nobody. *sings* "Dedicated Follower of Fashion" and tries not to laugh.

3)The Beach Boys--I'm more than certain if macca & lennon never lived ( :o) then Brian Wilson would be the crowned king of "symphony pop" (note to self: Kev, it didnt take rocket science to figure THAT one..)

4)Pink Floyd--Syd Barret & Roger Waters need to be knighted (well, at least Syd could be posthumously..but that'll never happen...pity, that.) I mean, C'MON !!..."See Emily Play", "Arnold Layne" ..and...um.."Dark Side of The Moon" ??? case closed.

What a horrible thought! Music as we know it would be completely different.

I would pick Bob Dylan, even though I don't think I would be nearly as enthusiastic about him as I am the Beatles.

Hi Andy Smith! Nope, I just introduced myself over in the meet and greet thread, after a couple months of hiding out and observing!

I think without The Beatles and The Stones, the face of popular music as we know it would not have developed in the same way. We may never have had The Kinks, The Yardbirds, Led Zep, and The Who. Rock 'n' Roll, as it was in the late 50's may have remained popular for longer. Jazz may not have started to lose it's popularity, and stayed a major influence for years to come. Soul music, on the other hand was already well into development, so we'd probably still have ended up with Rap, Hip Hop, and what people today like to call R & B. Maybe Disco would have encouraged a kind of 'Punk Soul' in the 70's!

Man, it's a horrible thought to think that the Beatles would've never been born! When I try to think of other musicians that I would like, I'm thinking "God, how could I live without the Beatles, none of these people measure up for me."

Well, I think probably Jimi Hendrix, Dylan, Beach Boys, Elvis, Jackson Browne.

The world would be a sad place without them, then again if they never existed we would have no idea so it wouldn't matter.  Thank god thats not the case!!

Not Beatles and no Stones.... *shudders*

Next I would pick Hendrix, The Doors, Elvis.

I don't know. I wasn't really around then so I guess I'd be listening to Rap...
no no, I couldn't do that maybe like...I don't know I listen to mostly the Beatles and a few random artists from today.
Maybe just Musicals.
