I love the relentlessnes of the guitar on I Want You just like John's personality.  Also the sad droning acoustic intro of A Day In The Life as it leads into John's haunting beautiful vocal.

hi all

can anybody here give me a good list of great beatles songs(and lennon songs), that show john lennons skill as a guitar player?i know he wasnt as good as hendrix, but he does a pretty good job on some solos...this is what john said about himself as a guitarist in an interview:

"Im okay. Im not technically very good, but I can make it f***ing howl and move. I was a rhythym guitarist, and its an important job. I can make a band drive"

"I can never move. But i can make a guitar speak"

...

He also said in the Rolling Stone interview (1971):
http://www.johnlennon.it/rolling_stone_interview.htm

"How do you rate yourself as a guitarist?

Well, it depends on what kind of guitarist. I'm okay; I'm not technically good, but I can make it f***ing howl and move. I was rhythm guitarist. It's an important job. I can make a band drive.

How do you rate George?

He's pretty good [laughs]. I prefer myself. I have to be honest, you know. I'm really very embarrassed about my guitar playing, in one way, because it's very poor; I can never move, but I can make a guitar speak. I think there's a guy called Ritchie Valens, no, Richie Havens. Does he play very strange guitar? He's a black guy that was in a concert and sang "Strawberry Fields'' or something. He plays, like, one chord all the time. He plays a pretty funky guitar. But he doesn't seem to be able to play in the real terms at all. I'm like that. Yoko has made me feel cocky about my guitar. You see, one part of me says, "Yes, of course I can play,'' because I can make a rock move, you know? But the other part of me says, "Well, I wish I could just do like B.B. King.'' If you would put me with B.B. King, I would feel real silly. I'm an artist, and if you give me a tuba, I'll bring you something out of it."

---------------

Now remember that that very year he called George to play the guitar on some of the songs he was recording for Imagine, the album ... that makes me think about his words "I prefer myself. I have to be honest, you know" ...

... John's guitar works that I like:

the solos of You Can't Do That and Get Back
the chords sequence of Help!, A Day In The Life and Across The Universe among others
the fingerpicker of Julia and Dear Prudence

Eric Clapton said John was a very good guitar player, and he would know since  he was a member of his 1969 Plastic Ono Band and played live in concert with him.  Nobody mentions in addition to all of the songs you have mentioned, Paul's great blues rocker from late 1964,She's A Woman. Paul once said in an interview that it was John chomping away on that.

John Lennon's best Beatles guitar performances, in no particular order:

- The guitar solo on "Hey Bulldog"

- The Rickenbacker guitar solo on "You Can't Do That"

- The guitar solo on "I Want You (She's So Heavy)"

- The triplet-based Rickenbacker rhythm guitar track on "All My Loving"

- The twelve-string acoustic rhythm on "Help"

- The overdriven guitar on "Revolution"

- The jazzy solo on "Honey Pie"

- The hypnotic finger picking on "Dear Prudence"

- Acoustic rhythm in "A Day In The Life"

- The solo in "Get Back"

- Lennon's intense guitar tone on "The End" (#3 in order of soloists)

- The acoustic guitar hook on "Norwegian Wood"

Great guitarist, that John Lennon...

:o In the last few days I've read about all these solos that I really admired George for, and now I'm finding out they weren't.  :(  I had no idea George didn't do the solo in Honey Pie (or "Good Morning/Good Morning" for that matter).

Would someone be able to please post a link for the Honey Pie one?

Thanks !

Thanks, Raxo. The preponderance of evidence ... John played lead on that song, not George.

Waaaaaah!
