But why are these composers called classics?  ;D

Because they composed music in times that were dominated by bourgeois culture, as Kevin says '...sums up a certain time or style.' This was before working class people had the vote and had little spare capital. The Beatles and other bands sum up a certain time where working class youth culture was pushing and purchasing popular culture and pop culture had come to dominate culture. Not to detract from classical music however.

Personally I've always thought "classical" music and composers was a genre, not a statement of quality. There is good and bad, old and new "classical" music. It is still written, performed and sold by the bucket load today. Totally different to the meaning of a "classic" Beatles song.
I would say it got that tag because it was the first formal musical style (other than Gregorian chanting and the like) that western culture had. I'm sure popular music for peasants etc existed (Morris dancing etc), it just hasn't remained popular.
Which is why I'm a doubting Thomas when people say Beatles will be  classical music in 300 years.

A genre, but it defined an era which was dominated by the upper class (don't they still?), and before communication and technology and the rising affluence of the working class could allow popular culture to dominate. Most of the twentieth century orchestral music is now (perhaps ironically) called modern. The music period before classical was called baroque and before that medieval (the Gregorian chants I think). Another interesting turn was that much of the popular music of the sixties and seventies, according to musicologists, is also baroque in nature.

From Merriam-Webster online:

1 : of, relating to, or having the characteristics of a style of artistic expression prevalent especially in the 17th century that is marked generally by use of complex forms, bold ornamentation, and the juxtaposition of contrasting elements often conveying a sense of drama, movement, and tension
2 : characterized by grotesqueness, extravagance, complexity, or flamboyance

From wikipedia:

Baroque music

It should be noted that the application of the term "Baroque" to music is a relatively recent development. The first use of the word "Baroque" in music was only in 1919, by Curt Sachs, and it was not until 1940 that it was first used in English (in an article published by Manfred Bukofzer). Even as late as 1960 there was still considerable dispute in academic circles over whether music as diverse as that by Jacopo Peri, François Couperin and J.S. Bach could be meaningfully bundled together under a single stylistic term.

Modern usage

In contemporary culture the term "baroque" is also commonly used to describe any artistic style that could be extremely elaborate, ornamented or adorned. In reality, the modern usage of baroque has nothing or very little to do with classic baroque, even though many people are unaware of the distinction.

Ob-la-di Ob-la-da is one of my favourite songs on The White Album. I never understood why they gave it away to Marmalade instead of releasing it themselves as a single.

And George should never have complained that he didn't get enough space on Beatles albums, and than put on sh*te like Savoy Truffle!

"Revolution 9" isn't really a song, and "Mr. Moonlight" isn't really the Beatles. That left me only 5 choices in the poll.

Personally, I find "Yellow Submarine" adorable. It's very fun to sing in the car. The song that really gives me hives every time I hear it is "Michelle" -- don't ask me why. It just hits the icky spot.  :(

I think one of the most annoying Beatles songs is Yellow Submarine.

Yellow Submarine is wonderful. I especially like the version on the Real Love cd with the spoken introduction.

Revolution 9 for me. Some of the choices are among my favorites. I like Yellow Submarine, Hello Goodbye and Mr Moonlight.
