I know that John and Paul passed their 11-plus examinations but those were given at age 10 or 11.

The photo of John is him with his school cap. Nothing to do with the scouts.

Yes, after being rejected a couple of times on try-outs.

I think that's his school cap from Dovedale. It's a photo taken specifically for school.

And here's a photo of him in full Quarrybank uniform.

I've never seen a photo of John in scout uniform.

I think  Quarrybank  must have been a  grammar  school  back then  as  John  passed his  11  plus

He  started in  the  A stream  but  very  soon   both  he  and  his  mate   (  Pete Shotton  ? )  were  both  demoted to the   C   stream  !

Yes it was a Grammar School.

Boys only and usually an all male staff.

The uniform would have been school cap, school tie, school blazer. Short trousers and shirt would have been of a limited choice of colour. Usually white or grey...

Oh, yes. Extremely strict.

That's why Lennon couldn't wait to get out of there.

But intellectuallly rewarding.

There is a pattern....  John would start fooling around... joking... and  being disruptive... thus he ends up  from  the  A  stream  to the  C  stream
same  pattern in the  church  choir...  fooling around again during the service  and ends up being banned from the  church .

They had lots of company while they read them! Richmal Crompton's books were published from 1922-1970 and adapted into movies and plays as well as radio and tv shows. I just read a bit of the first one and I can see why John and Paul liked them so much.

Just William

Richmal  Crompton   was a school  teacher who eventually packed it in  and began  writing  full  time
