'The Angel and Daniel Johnston...' Trailers
« on: November 16, 2008, 02:29:08 PM »

Hi folks,

Some of you may possible recall me from running the old 'Beatles Rumour Mill' forum (which started about 10 years ago now!).

You may be familiar with the works of Daniel Johnston. He is a musician and artist hailing from Texas way. In the early 80's, driven by an obsession with the Beatles, he started recording what many regard as landmark lo-fi albums on a small cassette recorder. Eventually after handing copies of these tapes to friends and people he met in the street, he gained a reputation for being a gifted songwriter. Unfortunately, the same depression and mental illness that gave him the confidence to declare his work fully fledged records also hampered him from achieving commercial success. By the early 1990's Johnston had spent many years in and out of mental hospitals and his career was effectively over before it started.

However, in the last few years Dan has made great strides forwards. Last year he came and played a gig at the Union Chapel in the Angel Islington, London and blow me down if I was not there to catch with a film crew and a great wodge of audio equipment. Next month my tiny little label is making the DVD of that film its first release. The foreword is written by the one and only Doug Sulpy, top Beatles author. I've put out a couple of trailers and I would really like to see what the Beatle fans over here thought of them.

This is the first proper trailer, featuring the song "Grievances":

I have been a lurker on various Beatles boards for a few years. But since I shut down the Rumour Mill I have rarely, if ever posted on any. I pretty much did all my Beatles based debating there. I think maybe the Rumour Mill's biggest claim to fame might be that it was liked to on the Bootlegzone himepage for about 5 years after it closed :) If I was going to name drop I might mention that my Nan and Aunt are acquainted with
Mark Lewishon.

Of course I have a personal interest in posting this message, but I genuinely think some of you guys will enjoy the trailers and the work of this very interesting artist.

Daniel has wrote some brilliant songs. I mean really brilliant songs. He would have walked into the Beatles, the Beach Boys, in fact pretty much any band of the Sixties, Seventies or Eighties purely as a songwriter. I think the night we caught him he was doing his material about as good as he can do it in the most suited venue in front of an audience that loved him. The thing that gets me with him is how much meaning he can squeeze into words.

But yes, they are his compositions. Every song on the DVD is written by him, except "Some Things Last a Long Time" which he cowrote with Jad Fair of Half Japanese.

You can find out more about Daniel's music and art in general at http://www.rejectedunknown.com

many talented song writers are just that rob it seems there is more to music than writing, playing and producing.....i think those trying to cover all the bases stretch a bit much at times and make inferior tunes....i love lightly driven tunes...jose felicino to me is a masterful tunesmith...do you like kristofferson as a lyricist?

I am 28 years old. The page I originally started was called "The Barmy Beatles Bootleg Barn" and it was a very basic design from Publisher 97. There was a site called the "Beatles Bootleg Central" which had lots of 11khz real audio files of bootlegged tracks. I tried to do an mp3 version of that, mainly because I wanted to get hold of the tracks. I did not realise that there were bootleg cds, so I thought it would be the only way for me to get the music. I asked people to send me tracks and I would host them on free 10 meg angelfire and geocities accounts all over the web. Eventually we got busted, but the vestiges of the site remained. A forum that no-one went on being the main one. I abandoned it for a few months, and when I came back, there were people chatting, and the Beatles Rumour Mill was born.

I'm afraid I'm not familiar with Kristofferson. What attracted me to Daniel's work was that we had many similarities in our life and the belief that we were creating some kind of masterpieces at one point or another. We were both influenced strong by Plastic Ono Band's recording ethos. I saw a documentary about Dan, and I felt I had to work with this guy, and a few months later I got it arranged :)

A couple of examples of Daniel at his best (with fan made videos):

I find a lot of his work to be almost like a continuation of John Lennon's Dakota demos. We have talked about this.
