"That Means A Lot" (from Anthology 2)
« on: September 07, 2007, 01:14:26 PM »

If there's a thread on this already, I apologize, I couldn't find it.

I can't believe the Beatles didn't care for this little gem.  I find it to be a very strong song, probably better than some of the other early ballads they released in 1965...particularily the end, wow.  And the version found on "Anthology 2" is not the best vocal quality.

Yeah great song! PJ Proby's version was crap though!

Thos harmonies at the end of The Beatle version always reminded me of The Hollies.

I find it an OK song, not one of their best though.
I can understand why they didn't release it as their own.

I like the song, but as I've said before even those not so good songs sound great with The Beatles.

Amazing that they saw it as a throwaway.

Anyone knows why the quality of the vocal in the Anthology 2 is so poor? Did they recorded it in a bathroom or what?

By the way, it happens to me in the same way as with If You've Got Trouble. It's quite better than Act Naturally, specially considering that the latter is a cover!

I don't think that's exactly the case. They certainly did put time in, a prove of that they tried to get it right. It didn't work out, but to call it a throwaway is too much I think.

They recorded two different versions.

Did they now?  I got the "bathroom" version, too.  Anybody heard the second version?

I'm not that fond of either song. If You've Got Trouble is OK, but very repetative. It also sounds more like it should have been on Beatles for Sale, rather than Help. Neither song fits with the overall sound of Help.

It's a cool song, but imagining as part of 'Help!' is difficult for me. It feels more like it fits with stuff from a bit earlier, like on 'AHDN', if that makes any sense.

I think it's one of Paul's early sonic experiments, carrying on from "What You're Doing" and "She's A Woman" and very obviously influenced by (in a bad derivative way) John's "Ticket To Ride." The arrangement of the version on Anthology 2 is surely off, but the booted alternative takes aren't any more convincing. It sounds to me like Paul was trying to do his own version of "Ticket To Ride," but the song isn't thought out properly, either musically or lyrically. It's like an abandoned first draft.

I think every song that was recorded by them, and subsequently dropped was a correct decision. That doesn't mean that I don't like any of them. I suppose 'That Means A Lot' could have replaced 'Dizzy Miss Lizzy', but I don't think it was good enough.
