Oasis and The Beatles!
« on: May 18, 2004, 11:32:44 PM »

Inspired by Guitar Hero's post on another thread, here's just a selection of the many Beatle references by Oasis.

Be Here Now
"Sing a song for me, one from Let it be, open up your eyes, get a grip off yourself inside."
'Be Here Now' is also a buddhist reference made by Lennon saying that the point of life was to be here now.

Be Here Now - sleeve
There are loads of Beatles' references here, but the main one is the Rolls Royce; it has the same number plate as the police van on the Abbey Road sleeve.

D' You Know What I Mean?
"The fool on the hill and I feel fine..."

Fade In- Out
"Get on the helter skelter..."

Take Me Away
"I'd like to be under the sea", from Octopus's Garden

Morning Glory
"Tomorrow never knows what it doesn't know too soon."

My Big Mouth
"....down the long and winding road..."

Don't Look Back In Anger
"So I'll start a revolution from my bed, cause you said the brains I had went to my head."
A direct quote from John Lennon from his 'bed-peace' days. The opening chords sound suspiciously like Imagine! Could also be from Revolution In The Head, a book about the Beatles and the Sixties. The video is also very similar to the Paperback Writer/Rain promos.

It's Getting Better (Man!!)
"just say the word and you'll be free", from The Word. The title is also a Beatle rip-off!

Magic Pie
A reference to John Lennon's "Dubious Origins Of The Beatles" an article he wrote for the first issue of Mersey Beat; "a man appered on a flaming pie and said unto them and said 'From this day on you are Beatles with an A' "

Roll With It
"It's all too much for me to take."

Round Are Way
A cross between Good Day Sunshine and Got To Get You Into My Life.

She's Electric
The end is the same as With A Little Help From My Friends

Who Feels Love?
Very similar guitar lines as Dear Prudence.

Supersonic
"Can I ride with you in your BMW, you can sail with me in my Yellow Submarine"

All Around The World
The video is in the style of the Yellow Submarine cartoon - sounds like a Beatle song too!

Anyone know any more? ;D

Very good, The End!

yep, Oasis loikes Beatles' music a lot, that's why they make a similar style of music.

you forgot "Born on a Different Cloud"  Liam sings "Busy workin overtime" Identical to the way it's sung in "Happiness is a Warm Gun".

Oasis is definitely one of the best bands of the 1990's.  I hope we see something new from them soon.

I wanted to address these.

Be Here Now is also the name of a George Harrison song.

Magic Pie was Noel mis-reading the word Magpie in a dictionary, because he was looking for a word that rhymed with "by".

Who Feels Love is more similar to Thunderclap Newman or whoever they are and the song Something In The Air (I think it's called)

You also missed Wonderwall... pretty blatant one there lmao

^You're right. Everyone song is like a pub quiz question - everyones shouting out "Dylan" or "The Beatles." But they do it so tongue and cheek and reverentially that I can't help loving it. And despite all those things they still manage to sound unique - you always know its them.
I think they're a great listen

New "Oasis" song entitled "Pass Me Down The Wine" has the exact same opening guitar riff as the Beatles song "Things We Said Today" coincidence I think not!

It doesn't, it's not even the same chord.

Just because it's not in the same chord it can still sound similar.

But you said it had the exact same opening guitar riff. Are you retracting that statement and saying it sounds similar to the song now, even when the only similarity is that it is a minor chord. The strumming pattern is even totally different. No need to take it as a dig, I was just saying that is isn't the exact same opening guitar riff as you said.

Now "I Can See A Liar" has some similarities to The Who song "Pictures Of Lily".

Well Pictures Of Lily has to be the most overlooked Who song of all time!  Both songs have a similar opening. When I heard the "Oasis" song I said to myself doesn't that sound similar to another song? And I thought of "Things We SAid Today" I thought they sounded similar to me they do. I don't know anything about minor chords they just sound the same to me.
