Young Blood - Coasters cover
« on: February 22, 2010, 08:12:37 PM »

I first heard "Young Blood" on Live At The BBC, like many Beatles fans have, and I think it's a pretty good song. However, I can't for the life of me figure out what they're saying between lines during the verses. It sounds like "ecky thump" to me, but that doesn't seem to make any sense. I know what ecky thump is (a form of martial arts involving blood sausages), but that joke didn't come about for many years after, right? Somehow I doubt that's what they're saying.

I sought enlightenment by listening to the Coasters version at this link:
The Coasters-Young Blood 78RPM

However, not only could I not understand what they were saying either, but in fact it seems like The Coasters and The Beatles are saying different things.

So what are the two bands saying on this song?

I found this on the site of a certain Dmitry. ha2ha

Young Blood
Authors: Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller, Doc Pomus; Lead vocal: George Harrison

I saw her standing on the corner (Yip yip boom)
A yellow ribbon in her hair (Yip yip boom)
I couldn't stop myself from calling
Well look a-there, look a-there
Wow look a-there, well look a-there
Young blood, young blood, young blood
I can't get you out of my mind

I took one look and I was fractured (Yip yip boom)
I tried to walk but I was lame (Yip yip boom)
I tried to talk but I just stuttered
Well what's your name, what's your name
Well what's your name, well what's your name
Young blood, ah young blood, young blood
I can't get you out of my mind

A crazy stop, she was the top
I tried to follow her all the way home
Things went bad, I met her dad
He said, "You'd better leave my daughter alone"
Ow!

Well I tried to speak but I just stuttered (Yip yip boom)
I saw the rising of the sun (Yip yip boom)
And all along my heart was falling
While you're the one, you're the one
While you're the one, ah you're the one
Young blood, oh young blood, yeah young blood
I can't get you out of my mind
Yeah young blood, oh young blood, yeah young blood
I can't get you out of my mind

I dig the Bad Company version of Young Blood so I looked up the lyrics to it. They sing ooh ooh ohh.

i saw her standing on the corner,
(ooh ooh ooh)
a yellow ribbon in her hair,
(ooh ooh ooh)

I fear this might be one of those songs where nothing is concrete to that part and many bands sang it differently. Good luck in your search though as its interesting. The Coasters sound like their singing YUP to me, but who knows.

The first cover I was aware of was Leon Russell’s in the Concert for the Bangladesh… he’d done a nice medley with Jumpin’ Jack Flash

Music's all right John, but you'll never make a living out of it.

Ecky Thump is an expression of surprise in northern England (not used so much now) but it would have been in use in Yorkshire and Lancashire in the early 60s.
The Beatles probably heard the original of Youngblood and couldn't make out the correct lyrics so improvised some of their own - probably used "ecky thump" because it got them a laugh if they did it at gigs up north.
