« on: May 29, 2008, 12:19:53 AM »

What is going on?!? First, they are the Beatles, then Dennis O'Bell, then some weird mumbling... things, and all over the place!

Don't even get me started on this song. Ask anyone who knows me and they can honestly say, as well as I, that this is the only Beatle song that I honestly dislike with a strong passion.
It's not like I can put my finger on one specific reason why I just can't stand this song. I think I can actually say I hate this song. It annoys me, it doesn't sound like them, it's a stupid song. And I'm not sure why I dislike it this much, I just always have. Since I found out it was them who sang it, because the first time I remember hearing it, I didn't even know it was The Beatles who sang it.

My overall opinion...SUCKY SONG!!!!!

(sorry to the beatles...I still love them with all my heart)

Brian Jones (from the Rolling Stones) is "suppose" to be playing Sax. I've heard rumors
it might not be the "Brian Jones" of the Stones, but that's who is credited.
I assume that at this point, if you were as big as the Beatles were in the late 60's
(they actually started recording this in roughly 67 -68) you could have studio time for any
thing you wanted!!

I don't care much for the Anthology version. I don't like the reggae part. I much prefer the Let It Be b-side version.

Some history I read about this is that John and Paul were well on their way to permanent animosity, then somehow the two of them got together alone in a studio, had a lark, and this was the result. Either John or Paul (can't remember which) said this was the most fun he had with the other ever.

So, beyond the song itself, it sort of represents something, one of the last times the two of them were carefree together.

No it was around for years so is in no way John and Paul having a last fling together.
In fact maybe Paul insisted it came out as a Beatle b-side to counter John who  was threatening to bring it out as an a-side Plastic Ono single.
And that IS Brian Jones on sax.

I think I read somewhere that the guy is Brian Jones, but that it's not the Rolling Stone, but a session musician with the same name. I seem to recall it was in Mark Lewisohn's, but I'm not sure. After all, Brian Jones is quite a random name.

Earlier this year, I was extremely priviliged to see the fabulous Undertakers live at a church hall. No Jackie Lomax was present, but they did have the original rhythm guitarist and the original saxaphonist - Brian Jones. After the show, I asked the slow walking, inhaler toking man whether it was he or the 'other' Brian Jones on the record. He confirmed that it was 'the other one'. "The one that couldn't swim."

To suggest Brian 'Undertakers' Jones was on this track is a bit of an insult to him, really - even well into his 70s he has a total mastery of his instrument that I've rarely seen in 15 years of watching bands!

It was indeed Brian Jones of the Stones.

Some info here, including quotes from McCartney etc: http://www.beatlesbible.com/songs/you-know-my-name-look-up-the-number/
