Boy, Todd, I don't know. It's kind of a draw. I never heard this song before so I listened several times to both. I was going to say I liked The Pretty Things version best because The Kinks version did this thing where the left channel cut out for a few seconds. But then I listened to it from another source and I guess that's not really supposed to be there. LOL I do like that The Pretty Things version has an extra verse that makes this guy sound even more like creep. The more psychedelic intro is neat in TPT version but I also like the way the other version has a more folky sound. I can hear shades of several songs in this one but I can't quite put my finger on what they are. It will bug me until I do. But it's a great song and I'm glad you posted it.

I like The Pretty Things version the best, and I think it could be down to production, The Kinks sound tinny and the singing is not as good, also I prefer the lead guitar break on The Pretty Things version.
I prefer the louder bass and the intro to The pretty Things as well

Pretty Things  9/10
Kinks  7/10

I prefer the original kinky version.

Here's another song from that good album covered by Herman's Hermits. Who do you prefer?

I never liked the Hermans Hermits version of that song.  Peter Noones voice doesnt do it justice,
