Lennon's Scraps
« on: May 13, 2004, 03:30:27 PM »

It's amazing the way John would pull an old reference out to use in
a song, from out of the past or out of thin air...this tidbit from the
beginning of his career to the end:

JOHN: Let's get on with the interviews, then.

Q: I'll tell you something, I haven't any charms 'round my neck, but
Ringo's trying to get something placed somewhere, now what is it,
 Ringo?

RINGO: I don't know what they're called, they're little green idols
 you wear.

*****JOHN: There's a little yellow idol to the north of Katmandu!*****

Yes, I know Milk and Honey's version is 'island' over 'idol', but still...amazing to me!

Charlie, I'm not trying to be a "smarty" here, but just to set the record straight: In NOBODY TOLD ME, John sings "idol" pretty clearly, as far as I can hear. In the lyric sheet the lyric is given as "idol" not "island".

Actually, the line There's a little yellow idol to the north of Katmandu! is a misquote (of the sort which everybody does) from a famous poem. John Lennon and every other English schoolchild in those far-off days would have learned this poem off by heart

The broken-hearted people are the parted ones. And though they may be parted, there is still a chance that they will see ...
