I've always liked their version of Besame Mucho; not a favorite, but still enjoyable. The original is lovely.

Besame Much is horrible schmaltzy goo.

Remember, they never released it in ths sixties.

And quite rightly so.

Besame Much is horrible schmaltzy goo.

You know, when I started on ocean liner forums 'way back in the 90s, I learned a lot. One lesson was to precede an opinion that flat-out dismisses something as bad with something along the lines of "In my opinion. . . "

You said Besame Mucho is "enjoyable". You said the original is "lovely".

You didn't say "in my opinion".

So you didn't learn that much on your ocean liner forums, did you?

I think my phrasing in the first instance is sufficiently clear. And to pacify you, I'll rephrase: "I think the original is lovely."

Happy now?  roll:)

Nope.

And I still say Besame Mucho is without a doubt horrible schmaltzy goo and was most definitely never released officially by the Beatles in the sixties with good reason.

The covers they did really helped expand my knowledge of music by tracking down the original songs. (OK, that sentence is a grammatical nightmare, but you all know what I mean.)

Yes, I know what you mean, Kathy.  And that's the beauty of a forum; it's the opportunity to discuss our thoughts on various subject matters and enables us to gain as well as impart knowledge.

In the early '60s, John Lennon was inspired by Rosie Hamlin of Rosie and the Originals to have The Beatles cover several of the girl group R&B and doo-wop songs...

1960

Indeed, John Lennon called it his "all-time favorite" and recorded it in 1973...

For certain reasons, John didn't include it on his Rock ‘n’ Roll covers album.  Yet it remained a song he held dear to his heart.  His vocal was different than any of his vocals I heard before, clearly paying homage to her.

Besame Much is horrible schmaltzy goo.

Nonetheless, Bésame Mucho remains one of the most popular songs of The Twentieth Century and a Latin music standard.

Thanks so much for sharing those recordings, Barry; I loved them! I used to call (well, still do) my son my "sweet angel dream baby."

I'm going to add both of those to my playlist right now.  :)

Yes indeed.

The Beatles very probably were inspired by the Coasters' version which I like because it has a nice groove.

Unfortunately the Fabs, as with most of their Coasters' material, decided to do a jokey version with those ridiculous "cha-cha-booms".

Wer'e coming up to the sixtieth anniversay of the Decca audition where the Beatles performed this song.

By chance, I just read this:

"Paul did Besame Mucho at Brian's insistence. He muttered that it was a silly ballad." - Tony Bramwell, Magical Mystery Tours.

Maybe that was Paul's way of livening up the Latin beat...Desi Arnaz style...

Brian Epstein wasn't wrong in his insistence.  He had his finger on the pulse of popular music in the early 60s.  He was quite intuitive in this regard.  Latin music was very popular at that time and dance halls played cha-chas and rumbas.  Indeed, bossa nova soon became popular with the hallmark Girl From Ipanema as well as Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 later on.

But fortunately The Beatles chose their own path in the music field.

Okay, Kevin.  I'm sure you've been waiting for this one.  It's one of my favorite Beatles songs, early or late...

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZQ8nWZJrhA" target="_blank" class="aeva_link bbc_link new_win">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZQ8nWZJrhA</a>

This version, with the organ, is my favorite.  What a romantic song this is!  Yes, the 1964 World's Fair New York City Pavilion was converted to an ice skating rink after the fair closed...

The organist used to play Mr. Moonlight frequently.  Skating with a girl to that tune was as romantic as it gets!  On ice, that is.  ;)

I'll choose Paul McCartney over Brian Epstein any day.

Mr Moonlight is horrible Baz, they couldve put World Without Love  on the album instead !

Oh

Well, on that theme, I think this is a catchy little tune and it was fun to hear Paul do it in concert.

Agreed.

World Without Love has a nice tune and they could have fixed the words.

And it's a Lennon/McCartney composition.
