An almost The Beatles album
« on: January 14, 2019, 12:20:08 AM »

I was just thinking.  How many records did John, George and Ringo appear on together during their solo years?  I know both George and John appeared on Ringo's records and they on each other's.

If there were enough songs, maybe an "Almost the Beatles" album could be compiled.  But then, that would be the Beatles minus Paul.

Well, I think it would be interesting, that's all.

All Those Years Ago had George, Ringo and Paul on it, although Paul just did some backing vocals with Linda

I’m the Greatest from Ringo  has John George and Ringo.

Can’t think of any others.

I should have researched this more before I posted it.  I thought there were more JGR songs.  When I get some time, I'll try to explore it further.

There were unsubstantiated rumours that a John was involved in a session on All Things Must Pass. One of the other musicians on the album claimed he played rhythm guitar. So, if that’s true and it was on one of the tracks Ringo drummed on, then there would be another JGR track. But that’s making some big assumptions.

Yes.  They all look shocked...and stunned.

I just read an article (which I posted minutes ago in the Books section) that speculated that John played rhythm guitar on "My Sweet Lord."  Later he made a comment that sounded like he may not have been on the record.  So, who knows?

I doubt John remembered what shoes he’d put on that morning for much of the seventies. John definitely did visit the sessions. He was quoted as being very complementary about what he heard, contrary to his later dismissal of the album. But whether he played on it will alas remain just a possibility.

I just thought of a new spin on this idea of an "Almost the Beatles" album.

One way to create an album like this would be to listen to all their solo albums and then assemble the most Beatlesque songs they made as an album.  At the moment, I can't think of any examples but I will ponder this and see if I can come up with anything.

“I Don’t Believe You” from Ringo’s Time Takes Time LP sounds just like The Beatles to me... so that’s my first suggestion for the “Maybe the Beatles album”...

Well, of course it is... Ringo is reading aloud a telegram from Brian informing them of Paul’s death while John and George listen. George lights some incense in homage to a recently deceased Paul McCartney, MBE, R.I.P., while John stands motionless, stunned beyond belief and fiddling nervously with his guitar.

Only moments later, J, G & R devise a plan to cover for Paul’s loss - an alternate band they will refer to as “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” (lonely hearts because of how much they miss Paul).  This concept will also buy them time to find a replacement (recall this was the longest time span between new Beatles LPs in their history to date).  They also decide to credit Paul with the idea of SPLHCB to give the appearance that Paul is still alive and also b/c his death is what led to the inspiration for the ruse.

George writes “Within You, Without You” in homage to Paul.

And the rest, as they say, is history!  ;D

Fab4Fan:  That Ringo tune has a very Beatle-like ending!  Good choice.

I think Beautiful Girl by George off Thirty Three and a Third also had a Beatle sound

I can add another to this list.

Apparently George, with John and Ringo, is on Yoko’s Greenfield Morning on her Plastic Ono Band album.

They flew in a sitar part played by George.

The list grows.

Great call from Moog with George's Beautiful Girl which I've always regarded as very Beatley.

In the Double Fantasy recording sessions, John referred to Woman as "The Beatles track".

Also, I've always loved that Beatle vibe on With A Little Luck... Paul taking lead of course, but some very Lennonesque/Harrisonised backing vocals from Denny & Linda (just close your eyes)....

My vote goes to Olivia. She whacked George’s attacker with a poker from the fireplace probably saving his life. Which prompted Tom Petty after to ask George, “aren’t you glad you married a Mexican.”  ha2ha

ha2ha  I really needed that laugh.

My vote would go to Pattie. Not sure if she counts given that she is a first wife.
