The Animals

I can't seem to get enough of these guys... Eric Burdon has got one of the greatest voices in music history... He seems so laid-back and easy-going yet so full of emotion and power...

My favorites are:

House of the Rising Sun
Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood
Monterey
Anything
It's My Life
We Gotta Get Out of This Place
Spill The Wine...

So many more... Just a great band!

Anyone else agree? What are your favorites?

I agree totally.  Alan Price was no slouch on keyboards either.  If you want to see how great Eric Burdon was, compare the covers by Elvis Costello of "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" and one other (can't remember) on Elvis' King of America.  Boy, talk about not being in the same league.  And I love Elvis' voice.

They were indeed one of the great Brit Invasion groups.  Blues, R & B, rock n roll...just good good stuff.

ALl of their singles and a few album cuts.  And they are somewhat forgotten, oddly enough.

The Animals are one of the greatest rock groups of all time & pioneers of the British Invasion of the early 60's along with the Beatles, the Stones, the Kinks, the Yardbirds & the Who.

Really?  Eric played the acoustic solo in that?  Huh.  I'll be darned.

Thanks for posting that unreleased version.

It sounds like Hilton, Chas and Eric warming up for the real version. John joins in at about 2:30, but where's Alan?

Maybe he's hanging with Mickie Most plotting how to get his name, only, on the song, as writer (and all the future royalties). Too bad.

About 14 years later they kind of buried the hatchet for a 2 LP reunion and tour. This video shows that they still had it:

I tend to like rehearsals and early takes, this version of House Of The Rising Sun being an example.  Where was Alan Price?  Who knows.  But we get to hear a version with a guitar solo instead of the organ solo in the released version.  I wish this take went on longer.  It can be found on an LP set called The British Rock Explosion.

And what a great live show they put on.  Here are The Animals at the 1965 New Music Express Poll Winners Concert (note Ringo's drum set on one of the risers at the rear of the stage):

Thank you again for posting Animals. I really love that NME, Boom, Boom, Boom. They go wild and the sound and camera coverage are so perfect.

I saw them play at the Paramount in NYC in the late summer of 1964.I think it was a WMCA Good Guys show. Were you there by any chance, HG?

It was actually kind of scary. They were so menacing and sexual on stage, very different from the Beatles and Stones, who were kind of cuter at the time, easier for an eleven year old white kid from Brooklyn to appreciate.

Alan and Eric, what a great partnership. R&B purists.

Hey!  I was born in Brooklyn.  But I was living in Queens in the 60s.  I was 14 at the time and listened to WMCA all the time.  I knew about their NYC appearances, but I got stuck taking my kid sister to see A Hard Day's Night.  Three times!  I would have loved to see them live in those days.  The Animals were my favorite British band at the time.  It wasn't until Rubber Soul that I started taking The Beatles seriously.

What did they do on stage?
