« on: June 19, 2008, 11:08:19 AM »

It always saddens me to think that John planned to go on a world tour after Double Fantasy. If he had the chance, what do you reckon the set-list would be?

Here's mine:

1. Just Like (Starting Over)

2. Instant Karma

3. Beautiful Boy

4. Whatever gets you through the night

5. Meat City

6. I'm losing you

7. The Ballad of John and Yoko

8. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds

9. Working class hero

10. Mind games

11. #9 Dream

12. Jealous guy

13. Nobody Told me

14. Woman

15.Watching the wheels

16. Power to the people

Encore:

17. Imagine

18. Give Peace a Chance

I hope he would have thrown "New York City" in there somewhere. Of course he would have had to hire some people who could have played something like that, though: those Double Fantasy guys would have been blown off the stage by their own amplifiers.

Huh?  You mean the Sometime In New York City guys?  Double Fantasy had some pretty good studio musicians on it, IIRC.

The Double Fantasy group was pretty tame. Just compare "I'm Losing You" on Double Fantasy to the version recorded with Rick Nielson and Bun E Carlos of Cheap Trick on The Lennon Anthology.

I'd say t was what Lennon was looking for at the time,he kind of directed those guys to how he wanted them to sound.....some of those guys went on to do some heavy things.

It is sad to think about. You don't even think about mentioning that topic around my Dad.

He never toured, but he did do one off live shows, many of which are documented on Lennon albums. Live Peace 1969 is from a Toronto show, and Live In New York City is from Madison Square Garden in 1972. Another show from late 1969 and a set with Frank Zappa from about 1971 are on Some Time In New York City. One or two songs from a performance at the Apollo are on The Lennon Anthology, and his 1974 appearance with Elton John has been released on vinyl. "I Saw Her Standing There" from the Elton show is also on the Walls and Bridges reissue. There are probably others I've forgotten.

Side One of Life With The Lions, "Cambridge 1969" is another one.  "No Bed For Beatle John" (from the same album), may or may not count, depending on you define 'live performance'.  Probably not, since I don't think a hospital room counts as a public place.

I think he might have toured with Double Fantasy. It seemed like the beginning of a new time for John, just turning 40 and having 5 years off.

If Double Fantasy is anything to go by, you do realise that half the songs would be Yoko singing (by popular demand of er, Yoko).

I like to think that if he did live and embarked on a tour he'd have thrown a load of Beatles tunes in there.

Only if.

I don't know.............this IS something to think about.  Something tells me John would NEVER do a solo tour.  Maybe play on some shows and that, but NEVER do a big, full tour.

I may be way off on this, but I think I remember reading somewhere that John was at least considering a tour in 1981 with the group that recorded Double Fantasy.

His sister reported that he always had a trunk packed in his Dakota apartment labelled 'Liverpool' and that he'd started getting back in touch with her by telephone around the mid to end of 1980. It was widespread news at the time in the UK, certainly on local Liverpool radio stations.
