Was Beatles For Sale the immediate forerunner to Rubber Soul ?
« on: September 01, 2021, 03:16:02 AM »

Thought about this for a while now. Yes there is the album Help in between but for the  the more introverted and darker L & M songs on BFS I see as akin to RS.
Help being a kind of return to more poppy moptop Beatles. (Except for YGTHYLA)

Songs like Im A Loser, I Dont Wanna Spoil The Party, Every Little Thing, No Reply, Baby's In Black all have the feel of RS.

What do you think ?

I agree. I’ve thought for a long time some originals on Beatles for Sale could have fitted well on RS. That’s one reason I’ve always rated BfS higher than many people. Sure the covers drag it down a bit but I really like the originals.

Not that I thought Help was a backward step. Songs like Ticket to Ride and the title track as well as YGTHYLA also are steps forward. But it was a bit patchy compared to lots of other albums and wasn’t the advance we expect from them on each album. And ending it with Dizzy Miss Lizzie was definitely like they were going back to their mop top days.

Yeah I think Help belongs in their early period and the originals on BFS were a move into their quieter slightly darker middle period. Even the cover photos on BFS show more world weary faces, with more serious expressions.
Im always amazed the didnt put 2 or 3 more originals on BFS, like Ill Be On My Way (Great song) , or World Without Love. Or what about including I Feel Fine and Shes A Woman ?

And Ive always wondered why BFS had a gatefold cover !

I do agree Moog that Ticket To Ride and Help were brilliant songs.

I like I’ll Be On My Way too. But perhaps it was thematically to much like I’ll Follow the Sun. And apparently John didn’t like the moonlight/June light rhyme. Just like John vetoed World Without Love after hearing the opening lyric.

I don't know - I think they needed the HELP album to be "poppy" for the sake of the movie.

I think that’s probably a good part of it Loco. Although doing the throwback (a whole year and a half) of ending the album with a John screamer seems to be taking things a little far.

Amazing how a song like Help sung as a ballad can sound like a real cry for help, but for the movie (and single) they morphed it into a jollyish pop song ala Hard Days Night.

I think that’s why I prefer it done fast. Done slow it sounds much too self pitying
