I'm still in practice, breedofrandy.  This happened near the end of Mr. Harburg's career and at the very start of mine.  I was very surprised when the nurse told me who he was and quite embarassed that I had not recognized the name.

After he joked that he was glad I didn't know who he was the night before, I settled down a bit and was able to carry on a coherent conversation with him.  He was, as you mentioned, a very humble person with a very special gift.  I told him so and he returned the compliment saying how grateful he was that I was on call the previous night.
